Sudden dizziness on Parnate?

Posted by Malcolm664 on May 28, 2007, at 6:14:30

Hi: I've been on Parnate since the end of April and just yesterday, I've noticed that I've gotten
suddently very dizzy. I literally fell to the floor about four times last night while going to the bathroom. I'm on 60 mgs.

Not to mention the fact that I went rowing (skulling) yesterday and my motor coordination was pretty bad; it was almost as if I was learning to row for the first time all over again.

I'm pretty sure that it's the Parnate (although I'm also on Xanax XR 1 mg and Klonopin 75 mgs daily but I really doubt that they could be those meds which are causing the sudden dizziness).

My immediate feelings are that FINALLY I'm having some reaction to the Parnate, even if it's not the reaction I was hoping for.

Also, I went to a public park on Saturday and was strangely relaxed.

But the dizziness is obviously a concern, b/c I start a week-long internship as a personal trainer at an upscale gym on June 11th and if I'm hoping that they hire me at the end of it, I can't be falling all over the place.

I do remember having a similar reaction when I was on Nardil a year ago and it kicked in, except I don't remember actually falling down several times (I just remember feeling hyper-relaxed);

The feeling I'm having on Parnate so far is not quite as wonderful as the Nardil, but then it looks like the med is just beginning to kick in, so does this mean that the Parnate is finally working?

Or is it a serious reaction that I should alert my doctor about? Again, I can't imagine what else could be causing it.

And according to the google search I did, Parnate does cause dizziness, but none of them say whether it's an immediate reaction or something that happens only when the med has built up in your system.

Any ideas?

Parnate worked really well for me but I had to go off it due to the exact side-effect you are now experiencing..low blood pressure upon standing..I would get up to let the dog out and end of crawling on my hands and knees..tell your doctor about it..I'm going back on Parnate soon..cause it kicked my depression's butt..

I was hoping to say anti-dep free until I have surgery but found out surgery is not until September..will go on it and off it two weeks before surgery..

Your doctor may be able to prescribe something to counteract the hypotension..good luck to you

I'm sure you didn't mean 75mg of klonopin it must be .75mg correct as that would make me very dizzy unless you have a seizure disorder. Love Phillipa ps glad the med is working for you

Malcolm, how low is your BP? YOu should buy a BP cuff if you don't have one and monitor your BP daily or whenever you feel faint or dizzy. I monitor mine since I have hypotension and I just started Nardil. Any BP under 100/60 should be treated, started with an increased NACL (salt)diet or a drug called fluorinef for more severe cases. Of course reducing the dosage first is always the easiest method of doing this, as long as the AD effect is not reduced too significantly.

In any event, BP monitoring is critical for you since you have such severe effects on your BP.

Well, that's the thing: is the sudden dizziness a sign that the Parnate is in fact working? Or just low BP causing the effect. Yesterday when I went rowing and had probs with my coordination was the first time I had noticed ANY kind of reaction to the med, postive or neg (I would consider it a negative, but I'll gladly give up the rowing if the parnate would work!)

(And oops, yes I meant .75 mg Klonopin. If I had taken 75 mgs, I'd probably still be on the floor!!
LOL}

It's definitely a side effect from the Parnate. Try standing/getting up slower. Hope this helps.
