Lamictal Withdrawel - Side Effects

Posted by CK1 on May 22, 2007, at 8:43:39

Hi Guys,
I was on Lamictal 25mg for 8 months and decided to get off one month ago. STILL going through the WORST withdrawel of my life! 1) Dizzy
2) Lightheaded
3) Nauseated (awful)
4) Blurry Vision
5) Exhaustion

I am 23 years old and feel like I'm a sick senile old man. I have been on Effexor before and never had withdrawel with that.

Just wondering if anyone has had a withdrawel experience that lasted a long time and they got better! I am willing to go through this pain for another month or two but any more than that and I'm going back on Lamictal!

Let me know!!! I'm getting off drugs for good after I get through this (if I do). After seeing that they slowly take your health away and leave you hopeless.

Seems strange as that is a low dose and effexor is usually the one people have trouble coming off? Love Phillipa

yea....i know. Thanks for the expert advice. Low dose doesn't matter. Some people respond to 5mg of Paxil and some respond to 60mg. The person coming off 5mg can have worse withdrawel than the person coming off 60mg depending on their body chemistry.

I am looking for someone with actual, pertinant advice!

Thanks!

Okay, I have tapered down on lamotrigine from 300mg to 200mg. I had no side effects, except for the headache that you get when beginning it. I did eventually go back up 6 months later due to increased cycling.

I just want to add that I found you were rude to phillipa. None of us here are experts. Talk to the pharmacist for that. We can only go by personal experience. Usually AD's are harder to come off of than Anti-convulsants. So if you would like some responses perhaps you could be a little more polite. Thank you.

Hi

If you're still experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms you should restart Lamictal. The first step is to find the minimum dose of Lamictal which controls your symptoms. The second step is to taper gradually. Lamictal is available as 2mg and 5mg chewable/dispersible tablets which are clearly useful for tapering.

Yea...its strange. I've never had withdrawel from anything I've taken but, this time, it's really bad. I got really sick the day I quit taking it.....Just wondering if I'll get back to normal or if its going to take a few more months...

CKl what does your pdoc advise you to do? As seriously I have not heard of such a long withdrawal. Not trying to take away from you horrible pain. Try kalidescopse suggestion little pices if you don't have the ones he mentioned . So sorry to hear of you being in so much pain and discomfort. Love Phillipa

Is Lamicatl the only thing your taking? I had bad effects from lamictal, dizziness, lightheaded, memory /cognitive probelms...I fell down several times and eventually Lamictal was determined to be the culprit. I was so happy to come off of that drug but never had bad effects withdrawing from it, although I think the dizziness just continued through my stopping it it over only one or two days. I was on 100mg.

It didn't do anything to help my depression either alone or in combination with Cymbalta. Both meds did zilch for me. Cymbalta made me comatose, Lamictal made me a bumbling, stumbling fool. It was a pathetic scene for a while....

I have tapered down from 450 mg to 300 at 50 mg intervals and plan to taper off completely. The funny thing is that I am feeling better. It wasn't bothering me at the higher dosage; I am just trying to figure out which drugs I don't need. Obviously, everyone is different--I've been comatose from meds that didn't bother most other people--but I've not heard of discontinuation effects from Lamictal. Also, it depends on what other drugs you might be taking. I hope you're feeling better. Not all drugs make you feel bad.

Lamictal is a lifesaver for me, controls anxiety and lifts mood unlike any AD I've taken. It can be dangerous though - when I ran out - BANG - full tonic clonic(or whatever) seizure on the street and a ride to a hospital...So it might be wise to taper as lamictal is predominantly a seizure med(sudden WD can lower the seizure threshold).

What dose of Lamictal do you take and at what time, morning or evening?
