Canine Contraceptives

Posted by Quintal on April 25, 2007, at 16:23:13

My bitch, Poppy has just come into heat again and someone told me they get a hormone injection from the vet at the start of each period to stop it. Does anyone else use this method to prevent pregnancy, and does anyone know anything about it? I don't want to have her spayed as I may breed from her when she's two, and neutering ruined my other dog's coat and made him fat so I don't want to go down that route with her.

Q you seem to live in the wilderness are there that many female dogs that you couldn't confine him for a period of time? Or maybe breed now and then spay? Love Phillipa

Doggie Bloomers/Quintal

Q- I just spayed my female lab after 3 years of heat cycle. I too wanted to breed her but she had a mild hip dysplasia and I said I would only breed her if her hips passed OFA certification.

Her heat cycle was made much more easy with her wearing doggy bloomers, which I no longer need and if you want babble me, except size matters and she is a 80# lab so her bloomers are quite large.

I don't know anything about the injection but I would be leery about anything that can mess up the natural hormonal process especially since your goal is to breed her.

My girl never tried to take the bloomers off so they worked very well in the house. I freed her up when she went out and made sure no unneutered males lurking about.

Good luck and babble me if you want to know more about the bloomers, I could mail them to you. Still are almost new, her second pair!

Thank you stargazer for the kind offer! That's what I love about babble - the community spirit of people willing to help eachother out in times of crisis! I made a pair of bloomers myself actually from baby tights with a tail-hole cut in the back and a heavy-flow sanitary pad. The problem is Poppy is a Doberman x Staffie cross and very destructive. She tears them apart within minutes of being unobserved. My neutered male still attempts to mount her and unfortunately he also helps her undress before the act, so that method is really a no-go for now. Apparently there are tampons available, but I think she would probably pull those out too.

I'm concerned that she seems to be having three heat cycles a year, which seems a bit excessive. I think somewhere I read this might be a sign of gynecological problems, so maybe I should take her to the vet and discuss it further? I don't like the idea of messing up her hormones either but I like the idea of spaying even less. I suppose I could try confining her but she became very depressed and restless the last time I did that.

Oh well, maybe I should just make a chastity belt? Thanks again for the kind offer.

The real bloomers(drsfostermith.com)stayed on our dog when the homemade ones I made, she ripped off and chewed up, so you may still have success with the "official" one if you decide to try it. Nice fit with velcro side adjustment around her mid section. What an ordeal, she was very good at letting me take care of things during each cycle. It's now all over, yeah!!!! SG

I know wrong forum for this post!!!!So how's your meds working, I'm on Emsam and Abilify and taking it day by day. I am so sick of meds, I'm almost ready to throw the towel in again. I may almost be ready for Nardil, as this is my next choice or Strattera....

Hi Stargazer,

Sorry for my tardiness - I've been locked out of my email account and have had to pay to get it back again, so I didn't get the reminder notice! I think Pop has almost stopped bleeding now so she should be fine for a while.

I'm doing well on my cocktail of tianeptine and nicergoline, with a little pinch of codeine and L-tyrosine. I'd recommend you take a look at tyrosine actually because you were interested in noradrenergic drugs a while ago weren't you? Tyrosine is a precursor to noradrenaline and dopamine and it certainly does have an alerting, speedy feel to it that brightens your mood. Worth considering if you're looking for something mildly noradrenergic to add to your cocktail? It would be potentiated by the EMSAM, might even be dangerous at high doses, but like amphetamine I think most people actually can get away with taking small amounts with MAOIs.
