Thoughts in head

Posted by someday on March 28, 2007, at 10:55:41

I tried to discover how my thought pattern works and I found out the following symptoms.

I keep talking in my head as if I'm simulating a possible situation I can be in. For example, I imagined going to see my doctor and talk about this symptom. Then, I start talking in head going through conversation I give to the doctor. The talk in head is as if I'm actually talking to a person.

Making sound like a conversation is not the only symptom. When I try to think to myself, I tend to make complete sentences (I don't necessarily give extra effort or be obsessed about making complete sentences). For example, supposed I'm trying to buy some bananas from a grocery store, then my thought goes like "Should I buy this bunch or this? Banana is full of potasium. So, I should eat at least 1 per day." The thought not only make a conversation but it wanders around once I come up with imaginary situation.

It really bothers me when I try to sleep and can't fall asleep. I keep talking to myself in head in full sentences of imaginary conversation.

Is this because I type too much on computer or read too much? Like when you're writing or typing something, you read each word you write in head. Or when you're actually reading a book, you say each word in your head, right? My in-head talk feels like that.

I wonder what these symptoms relate to. It's not like some voice asking me to do things, but it's like my imaginary talk in head. I don't really force myself to start this but when I monitor what I'm doing in my head, I'm doing this.

Anyway, could someone please let me know what these symptoms are?

I'd guess a bit of anxiety or OCD thinking? I do that too. Love Phillipa

Ah, I thought so.
When I was young I had tourette's syndrome, and very slightly obsessed about even small sound when studying.

Now when I'm all grown-up, I don't have any tick symptoms, no compulsive behavior, but probably obsessive thoughts (like, keep thinking about situation that triggers my anxiety....)

Anyway, is Zyprexa considered to work well for both OCD and anxiety? I've tried some SSRI's in past and I did not have any good result. It made me hypoactive and caused more anxiety - weird.

That is a big thought on thought. I thought everyone did something similar to that.

If I fumble and accidentally try to put the ice cream in the fridge, I say out loud 'what the heck am I doing?'

If I leave a message on an answering machine I reherse what Im going to say in my head really fast. Before the beep.

Questions like this seem to me like philosophical questions, rather than symptoms. Or maybe I have some thought disorder too. It just seems too normal to me to be a disorder.

I do exactly the same. I don't know what it is. I've never been diagnosed with OCD but I definitely have obsessive thoughts. I'm also obsessive about cleaning- I put off doing it for as long as possible because when I start I become obsessed with things like reaching all the corners etc. So I suppose I have a ocd tendencies.

Recently I was at a conference where a researcher in behaviour declared that most of the time most people have no thoughts in their head- a blank mind, he called it. I was astonished. I'm NEVER free of thoughts- I'm constantly thinking of a million things an arguing with myself... It would be interesting to know whether other people do have blank periods.

I have also read that this sort of crowded mind- constant stream of thoughts, is often associated with bipolar depression.

Ines that is very interesting. I have mild OCD, and BipolarII.

I cannot even imagine having a blank mind. And most people do? I would get terribly bored.

I think I would go nuts if I could read other people's thoughts. Probably would sound like 100 AM radio stations playing in my mind at once.

Yeah, I know, I cannot even imagine what it would be like to have periods with no thoughts. I must say I would welcome it, though- sometimes it's very tiring to be so crowded up there and not be able to switch off.
I was actually very surprised when I heard this talk- I don't know how good the evidence he had was, it wasn't publshed anyhow. Apparently he had done some sort of sensus on campus. And he said that was the case with him- that unless he was actively engaging his mind to think through something, talk to someone or whatever, he didn't have any thoughts. In fact I seem to remember he said that was the majority of the time, but I could be wrong there.

My father sometimes does the thought streaming/racing when I'm around.

He will start with 'I think I might go hit a par3'. 'I think I'll get my grocery shopping done today.' 'Maybe I'll drive up through the scenic highway.' 'I'll go fishing at the river.' 'I'll clean up the house today'.

My ears start to hurt after awhile, and do fake active listening, 'yep' 'good idea'.

Then he usually sits around and drinks beer all day and watches Nascar.

I've mentioned to him about his racing thoughts. But he just thinks psychiatric theories are bull.

I think he definately has anger problems. Paranoia. Thoughts of violence when paranoid. And the drinking doesnt help. I've told him his thoughts that people are out to get him are illogical. Then he gets angered.

I only think he would be mentally healthier if he went to a psych doc. But he hates doctors. He thinks they are out to only get his money. Paranoia again.

Ugh.

I don't think it's only anxiety. It rather seems like this kind of talk thingy causes anxiety or aggrevates anxiety (at least for me). I'm gonna talk to my doctor about this and figure out if I can be on med for this.

I'm not on any med except very small amount of clonezapam atm. It's been a long time since been off any other med so I might try some new type of medication. I've only tried SSRI's, which I hated so much.

Thanks all for sharing your stories :)

Ines, do you know which type of bipolar it's associated with?

SSRIs drive me crazy too. I was on Klonopin for 3 years. I switched to Xanax, and it was sooo much better, I love it. Coping with anxiety is much better now.

As for not being able to turn obessive thoughts off while going to sleep, there are sleep aids out there for that. I take seroquel, I have the best sleep ever.

How often do you have to take Xanax per day?

Depending on the situation sometimes 3X per day. Right now I'm really stressed out because of moving into a new residence with bad credit history. Ugh. I just feel the 'Downward Spiral' setting in. This will probably be a 3X a day DAY.

Dealing with people who lie to my face, and when I show a hint of dissaproval, they tell on me and get 'scared'. What pussies. I mean what is a 120 pound girl going to do to another girl over a written dispute?

I have a headache. I hope you have luck with your meds.
