Doc is pushing Depakote ER...

Posted by TrishP on March 19, 2007, at 14:46:15

I've complained about the Emsam patch making me manic and my doc has really been pushing me to take the patch off at dinnertime and take 500mg of Depakote ER.

He thinks it would be a great mood stabilizer (since I do well with anti-convulsants).

I'm kinda scared. I, don't want to get fat.

Maybe the Depaokote Er will even out the hypomanic feeling of the Emsam.

Also - he wants me to have my blood checked before I see him next because he is wondering why my body - or liver - holds on the meds for so long. I guess I metabolise them slow?

have you tried Klonopin? If you're just kind of agitated--not a full blown (hypo)mania or psychosis--it seems like a BZD might be med #1 to try.

Weight gain can be a problem on depakote. Maybe your doc could give you something, like metformin, to help prevent weight gain?
What about other anticonvulsants...keppra, trileptal, dilantin, etc. ? Depakote is really popular, but I don't see why another AED, with a more acceptable SE profile, might not be OK, too. Ask your doc about your options.

I think liver functions tests first. I took low doses of trileptal and no wt gain for me. Good luck. Love Phillipa
