I've noticed that my most recent "episodes" have less from the check list of depression and more from the check list of anxiety. I feel like I've learned so much from my therapist that I've been able to cut down on some classic depression symptoms, but now I have more anxiety symptoms. Can depression ever "evolve" this way? I've heard of it going the other way; that too much anxiety finally gets you depressed. Or is it more that depression and anxiety are really closely related so that each person's set of symptoms will present in a unique way? I'm asking this because I wonder if sometime I might try a lower dose SSRI, and then just a benzo, as needed. I wouldn't want to build tolerance to a benzo, but what if I took them only when I had a "flare up" of anxiety, or panic attack? Anyway, it's something I want to talk to my psychologist about.

I think it can flow both ways--I don't think depression and anxiety are necessarily two separate, distinct entities; it makes sense that, for whatever reasons, symptoms can increase in one area and decrease in another, or increase/decrease in both.
Maybe you should try just a benzo for a while, see how that goes...you can cut down to as-needed use, or only take it as needed. I think you'd be amazed how your overall symptoms will improve if you can adequately control periods of intense tension.

cg092,
I think what you describe happened to me. At some point my symptoms shifted over to mostly anxiety. Anxiety and Depression do seem to exist as close cousins, I guess.
Will your doctor suggest anything else that addresses anxiety and doesn't cause tolerance? I can't think of anything specific; maybe a mood stabilizer? I know, it sucks to add more medications.

Do benzos always result in tolerance? And what if SSRI's don't work? What then. Getting very concerned and scared as I don't like what's happening to my body. Love Phillipa
