Zenica pushing seroquel for Bipolar depression

Posted by linkadge on February 15, 2007, at 18:25:28

I've seen all of these advertisements for seroquel for bipolar depression. It doesn't bother me so much that they advertise the treatment for bipolar depression. Its just that they say this:

"Have you tried several antidepressants and still feel depressed? You may have a different medical condition."

Then bla bla..seroquel for bipolar depression.

It is hard to say why it bothers me. Perhaps because they are pushing you to question your diagnosis just to try their drug.

I'd give a link to the advertisement, but its on one of those pages where the ad changes constantly.

Anyhone else seen the adds?

They need a new market--not only do people now realize the antidepressants suck, drug makers have stopped pushing them out. So, now , its time for everyone to be bipolar. When Prozac was first discovered, the plan was to market it as an **anxiolytic**--it was supposed to be like Valium, only energizing and clean in terms of cognition. Then, in the late 70s/early 80s, benzo-phobia hit, and it was reconceptualized as an antidepressant, which meant people who before had had "anxiety" now had "depression," and needed Prozac (although they might also STILL need one of those evil benzos--luckily, the 80s also brought us xanax).
So now, I think this "soft bipolar" stuff is just going to enhance markets. Doing OK on Zoloft? Think again--try Seroquel. Plus, since polypharmacy is the rule in bipolar, everyone can make $$$. Bipolar? Attention difficulties? Well, for you there's lamictal, plus adderall...mood and ADHD meds keeping you up? Good news--there's seroquel, for sedation and anxiety. Neuroleptics giving you akathisia? Try dissolving Klonopin and/or Xanax--maybe for a couple weeks, maybe forever.

Ads and big pharma aside, low to medium dose of low potential atypical antipsychotics have been used and approved for short episodes of bipolar mania for quite some time. Granted we can all make conspiracy stories of big pharma, but for some with Bipolar, these work. Maybe the aunt I never knew wouldn't have blown her head off.

at least when you have it recur and recur and exist embedded itself into your life despite it being 5 years since discontinuing the initiating drug. in my case paxil. i wonder when they will get onto this problem. oh yeah, i remember. never.

I'm not saying that they may not help some people, I am just saying that I question their tactics.

Its just that the line "tried several antidepresants and still feel depressed"? dosn't necessarily point to bipolar.

Antidepressants can fail for a kazillion different reasons other than bipolar.

I just think that changing ones diagnosis from unipolar to bipolar should depend on more than just the failure of antidepressants, or the efficacy of an atypical.

Some doctors might say. "An atypical works for your depression so therefore you are bipolar", but these diagnosis shouldn't be taken that lightly. A diagnosis of bipolar can carry years of specific medication choices that are not always fun.

Many pharmaceutical advertisements are in very poor taste......to say the least.
