I am an American living in Germany. I have had GAD, depression, and panic attacks my whole life. I have been on a variety of SSRI's and TCA's. Most recently I was on imipramine and diazapam for my anxiety etc. I could tolerate it but the imipramine still bothered me. My German doctor suggested that I try opipramol. I did a seamless switch from the imipramine. The opipramol started working and I eventually got off diazapam also. So far so good. My question is, does anyone know if opipramol is available in the U.S.? I will probably go back in 2 yrs and am concerned about not being able to find this drug that really works for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I did a quick internet search on it and all it said it is a widely prescribed drug in Germany. Basically a tricyclic without reuptake inhibiting properties, it blocks dopamine and serotonin receptors and has effects on sigma receptors.
What you could do while you are in Germany is search around for a pharmacy that will mail order it to you. International pharmacies used to be scarce but are more common now. People here including myself have ordered medicines from Germany and Sweden, amisulpride comes to mind. You can import a 90 days supply at a time. Customs is ok with it. You just can't import things like benzos, opioids, or stimulants. Each package I ever got from overseas had tape and staples on it, showing that it had been opened, and a green Customs sticker was on it saying "supplements".
The hard part is finding a pharmacy to ship it to you. As long as you are there and feeling decent, do some digging. You'll find one.
Of course you could always stock up with a huge supply to last a real long time and just bring it with you. But eventually if you stay with it you will need a German pharmacy contact.
The drug seems kind of like an atypical antipsychotic based on its description. Worst case scenario something like seroquel or zyprexa might work. Sure would be nice to keep the one you like though. Find that pharmacy.

Thank you so much for your quick response and information. I'll talk to my doctor and my pharmacy and try to look for a mail order pharmacy that ships to the U.S. After almost 20 yrs of searching for a drug that really works for me, I think I've finally found it. Thanks again.
