How exactly does Nardil reduce anxiety?

Posted by UgottaHaveHope on February 7, 2007, at 23:38:04

Can someone please explain it in laymen's terms? I am on the Emsam patch, and I think this will help some people with a lethargic depression, but mine is anxiety-induced.

Would love to hear any positive experiences with someone with GAD on Nardil. Thanks, Michael

Hi,
Most of the anxiety reducing effects of Nardil(Phenelzine) are thought to be caused by it's effect on GABA.

Phenelzine (PLZ) is a non-selective monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) commonly used to treat depression and panic disorder. As expected, PLZ increases brain levels of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. Interestingly, PLZ also elevates brain levels of Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and previous studies have suggested that these increases may also contribute to the anxiolytic effects of PLZ.

I have been taking a combination of Nardil with clonazepam(which also effects GABA) for most of the past ten years. It is the best combination of medications I have found for my generalized and social anxiety.
Good Luck,
Jedi

Exactly, the wide and complex range of chemicals maois have off the bat usualy help with anxiety, although unforuntly cause jitteriness.

Nardil has a unique mechanism which effects gaba levels and this makes it for some the much better fit for it.

Parnate/Nardil is really a trial drug,i guess the one good way to look at it is although u have to make a decision,at least there is more than a single one to look forward to in response.

Good luck.

Many people on here have had success with Nardil treating anxiety (and depression). While I am on one MAOI (Emsam), I might as well try the other. If that doesnt work, I can go in ton of different directions. You got to have hope! Michael
