From Zyprexa to Abilify - no problems so far

Posted by kotsunega on June 9, 2003, at 16:22:34

Has anyone else made a switch from zyprexa to abilify? Did you have any side effects? I've read here that lots of folks get nasty side effects from abilify, but so far, I haven't. My psydoc is weaning me off of zyprexa (going from 20 mg - to 15 mg - to 10 mg - to 5 mg) while increasing the mg of abilify. I am currently taking 10 mg zyprexa and 15 mg of abilify without having any side effects. I'm wondering if some of the abilify side effects will kick in once I am completely off the zyprexa. Anyone else doing this?

Hi,
I really don't know much about Abilify, but can I ask you how your experience with Zyprexa was? I am considering it myself.

I have heard insomniac complaints from zyprexa on w/drawal but if Abilify has sedative properties I would assume these would negate any sleep issues from Zyprexa's w/drawal.

All the best,
Ace.

Zyprexa was a life-saver for me. It was the first medication I had taken that actually took away my mania -- lithium and others did no good. I was really able to sleep well on Zyprexa -- maybe too well at times, although I didn't feel at all drugged. I always had a calm disposition and it's possible Zyprexa blunted my emotions a little bit at a 20 mg/day dose, but didn't turn me into a zombie in the process. Zyprexa became a good friend to me, but had one bothersome problem. It adversely affected my cholesteral and that was the factor that has caused me to change to Abilify which doesn't have that particular side effect. I do believe there is a withdrawal problem when weaning off Zyprexa. A couple years ago I stopped Zyprexa abruptly to try Geodon. It was a bad experience in that I had miserable insomnia for the two weeks I was taking Geodon. This time around, I am slowly coming off Zyprexa while titrating up on the Abilify and so far... so good! The change is imperceptible -- I feel like I am still just taking Zyprexa.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Hope everything goes good..keep us posted! (nm) » kotsunega

Kotsunega,

There have been several discussions threads here about Abilify, such as:
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20021127/msgs/129761.html

I don't know what you are taking it for, but if it is for psychosis, you should probably watch carefully for any re-emergence of psychotic symptoms. You will note from reading the above thread that this is what happened to Deb (aka 1313). On the other hand, there have been several posts by others who have been very happy with Abilify.

Good luck! Please let us know how it works out.

Greg,

Thanks for the advice. I am taking Abilify -- and took Zyprexa -- for mania (mixed) with delusional features. I'll keep a careful watch for any symptoms to return...gosh, I hope that doesn't happen...but thanks, just the same. My doctor tells me that bipolars do best on 30mg of Abilify and I will be increasing to 30mg later this week, then in another week, I'll be discontinuing the Zyprexa all together and flying solo on Abilify. We'll see what happens.

I was on Zyprexa for a two and a half years and I managed to gain about 165 lbs. My wife told me that I would eat in my sleep and at the worst time I was even eating frozen burritos while I was asleep. Now that I am on Abilify I feel even better. I stopped the late night binge eating and my weight has gone down to almost normal. Abilify gives me the energy to do stuff something Zyprexa never did. It has cleared my mind by stopping wandering thoughts and stopped my cycles of depression and mania. I highly recommend Abilify.

I tried that change, wasn't good. But I did find something better. Zyprexa+Abilify. The abilify seems to counter the bad effects of zyprexa, like weight gain and appatite, high blood sugar, energy and social withdraw.

I'm still testing this.

I'm taking 10mg zyprexa and 5mg abilify.

So far I'm one week into it.

It also seems to shorten over sleeping.

Do you still take Abilify?

Yes, unfortunately I'm still taking it. I don't think it's doing much but making me sleepy and irritated, as well as dizzy. Although, it could be the abrupt discontinuation of Effexor XR @ 100mg. I also have the weird shakes. OMG!! My pdoc wants to give it a few weeks first. I don't think I can wait that long. I'm on 20mg.
