Anything similar to Abilify?

Posted by TrishP on January 5, 2007, at 9:28:53

I actually miss Abilify. I just couldn't take the edema and weight gain I had with it.

I really liked how it helped me sleep though.

Is there anything like Abilify, but without the weight gain and water retention?

What about Geodon?

Geodon is the closest thing to abilify.

Hi,
They seem very similar to me. I can't take either of them. Abilify caused outright akathisia. Geodon caused tremors and a very nasty sence of inner restlessness for me. Everyone reacts differently, both of these drugs caused a degree of hypomania in me. Neither helped with sleep at all.

maybe you're better off not taking neuroleptics....if you're getting bad side effects early on, at relatively low doses, that does not bode well for long term..it could mean you're at a higher risk of tardive dyskinesia and other problems, like tardive akathisia.

Have you tried BuSpar? It plays with dopamine and serotonin, and it mixes well with a lot of other drugs.

You wrote, "Abilify caused outright akathisia."

The same thing happened to me. I found out what the very definition of akathisia was! Yuck!! And that was with my very first tiny dose. My pdoc at the time said, "Stop taking it and just take more Xanax until it wears off." It didn't wear off for a day. Since akathisia felt like terrible anxiety, and I already have a large anxiety component, I didn't want to try any more atypical antipsychotics. But years later I tried Seroquel because I read it had the lowest chance of akathisia. I don't think it's a miracle drug, but it sort of sedates me, and y'all know when you're having really bad anxiety you'll take even a little relief.

geodon, abilify, seroquel, zyprexa are all newer antipycotics that shouldn't have the side effects that the older meds cause but of course there is always that chance you could have the same side effects as the old meds. You must be very sensative to the meds.
