Searching for specific word re: stimulant s/e

Posted by saturn on January 4, 2007, at 19:38:46

There is a single specific word for a kind of loss of affect that can result from stimulants. I'm pretty sure the word has an l in it. It's not anhedonia but something similiar. I know this is very vague---but might anyone know what this word is? Thanks...Peace...Saturn.

Do you mean the drug is not working as well as it was? Or 'flat' effect from the misuse or abuse from using stims or the word 'tolerance'?

Avolition is the word. I guess it's not specific to stimulant use or abuse, but that's what I was looking for. Thank you. Peace...Saturn.

I think avolition involves an aspect of blunted affect, in a way. Thanks. Peace...Saturn.

Avolition can occur from stimulants? Is the effect permanent?

I had to look this one up:

avolition:
An inability to initiate and persist in goal-directed activities. When severe enough to be considered pathological, avolition is pervasive and prevents the person from completing many different types of activities (e.g., work, intellectual pursuits, self-care)

but I'm shocked... I thought that was exactly what ADD meds(stimulents) were supposed to PREVENT??

rebound? poop-out?

thanks,
lilith

when my doc upped my adderall too much at one point I found myself staring off into space, too stimulated to be effective. Is that avolition? my doc lowered it and said they called it he didn't mean to turn me into a "ritalin kid"

I'm kind of getting the impression that overdoing stimulants can lead to avolition- sort of sounds like frying out, doesn't it? I've noticed that there comes a point with ritalin where an increased dose does not increase benefit, rather, things go downhill. I don't have enough experience with other stimulants to speculate whether they'd be like that too or not.
