What is this 'thrill' feeling??

Posted by cgd092 on January 4, 2007, at 13:40:58

You know when you were a kid, and it was Chrismas eve? And you get sort of an excited thrill course thru your body whenever you thought about the next day? A thrill that literally feels like it's coming from your adrenal glads. This is the only thing I can think to describe it; I can't attest to what it feels like to do extreme sports, risky behavior, bungee jumping or roller coasters; I'm a pretty avoidant person. Anyway, I keep getting this "thrill" feeling. Exactly like when I was a kid and it was Christmas eve. Except: It keeps happening and happening, to the point where it almost feels sore and unpleasant near my adrenal glands. It doesn't feel exactly like anxiety, but is it? It's a feeling that, in a small amount, would indicate excitement. But repeatedly like this, it feels like something is over-firing and wrong, and hence unpleasant. I've had this mystery symptom off and on for years, but thought I'd better get to the bottom of what it is since it's bothering me. Thanks for any ideas!

Background: I'm on 40mg citalopram (Celexa), and recently started lamotrigine (Lamictal). Also 100mg/day of Seroquel for anxiety. I believe I have unipolar depression with a lot of anxiety.

Thanks!

I often get a sudden 'rush' of energy running through me when I think certain thoughts or usually for no reason at all. It's something I've associated with bipolar tendencies as it feels more like a caffeine or amphetamine buzz than anxiety and makes me feel high. When it lasts for days I call it hypomania.

Very interesting...Do you think that feeling could be *caused* by SSRi's? Thanks! -Katy

Yes, that feeling could just be the result of your depression lifting and the thoughts of new opportunities opening up for you. It's nothing to worry about unless you suspect you're becoming manic. I'd just enjoy it if I were you - sounds better than depression.

I was on Celexa from 2000 until a year & a bit ago.

I was on 20 mg most of that time.

I think it was sort of near the end of my taking it, that I would get sort of 'wired'....sort of manic...as if I was really excited & happy. Almost a bit embarrassing when I remember how I probably acted!!!!

I wonder if adding the other med makes the Celexa affect your brain differently?

At the time, my daughter said that she'd read that Celexa could make you hyper sometimes.

I can't remember. It might have even been around then that I decided to try to gradually cut back on my Celexa to stop it. My doctor laughed at me because I'd cut back by 5mg for a week, then 5 more mg, etc. He said, "How do you do THAT?" & I told him I'd break a 20 mg pill in 4, then near the end I'd bite the 1/4 pill. I wanted to go off it REALLY gradually!
