What doctor do I call?

Posted by lymom3 on November 23, 2006, at 17:02:55

The swelling in my hands, feet and legs is not getting any better and has persisted for a couple of months now, I think. My blood pressure is up too; not too high like over 140, but over 120 and hovering right around the 80 mark. . I know it started before my new meds (I have within the last 45 days added Provigil, Abilify and Ambien) but it does seem worse, BUT the meds are working. I feel better than I have in years. I know the added weight doesn't help (I've gained about 25lbs with botched med trials) but I've been trying to walk and watch my salt intake etc. I don't know what doctor to call. The psychiatrist as he prescribes the bulk of the meds and may or may not know if any of the psychiatric meds may contribute? The sleep doc that prescribes the Ambien? I'm thinking of stopping the Ambien and dealing with the insomnia as it will be the weekend and see if the swelling and/or blood pressure go down any. Does insomnia contribute to swelling? The neurologist who already prescribes my Inderal LA? At this point it is for migraine prevention but would he deal with anything to do with high blood pressure? My primary care doc who doesn't prescribe me anything? When I told her about the swelling several weeks ago, she told me to cut out salt and exercise more. When I was on Effexor (which I didn't know at the time could affect your blood pressure) my blood pressure was a little high so my internal med doctor started me on atenolol. Once I saw the migraine doc, he changed it to propanolol. I probably need a diuretic. I don't have a clue who to start with... help?????

That's my rant on all the specialists and not one doc. Maybe the pdoc first? Love Phillipa

Did the swelling start when you made a change to any of your psych meds? If so, I'd call pdoc. Otherwise, I'd call your GP since he/she is already treating you for HTN and related stuff.

I've taken Lasix before when I had swelling with Nardil. It was helpful in bringing it down with a very low dose.

Good luck,
gg
