Klonopin Questions

Posted by mr-vegemite on November 22, 2006, at 23:29:39

I'm on an SSRI and I often get very anxious...can't calm down...grinding teeth...constantly moving my right leg.

My doctor prescribed med 1mg of Klonopin to be taken once a day as needed. I was on antivan before but it didn't do anything for some reason.

Klonopin makes me feel so good and relaxed I'm taking it every day.

Any concerns with this? I'm new to this medicine.

Thanks!

Over time you may develop tolerance and need a higher dose. But in reality, that is almost 99% likely with the ssri. That's common to all meds.

Some people get more depressed on klonopin after a few days. If that happens, and it may not, and I hope it doesn't, the one with the most antidepressant punch to it is actually xanax.

All meds are hard to wean off of after longterm use. That's just a generic concern for any med.

You're lucky klonopin isn't depressing for you. xanax is a slight mood boost. But a short half-life. Good luck Love Phillipa

Klonopin is a great drug and has helped millions. Unfortunately it gets a bad rap because it is a benzo and some people abuse them, taking them for non-medicinal reasons.

I prefer Klonopin over Xanax, and I am actually taking less (0.5 mg/day) than I was 10 years ago (3 mg). My only suggestion is this: Try to take less or stay at your current level, so you can save heavy doses (3-5mg) when you really need it.

I've been on clon for years, initially 4mg, but later at 2mg. I have not develop tolerance, it works very well, every day, it's the best I've tried for social phobia. However, it probably has its drawbacks, I suffer from recurring depression and clon could be the culprit. Innocent until proven guilty I guess..

Good luck anyway.

There is a possibility of tolerance and habituation over a long period of time, but it is a medication that should be taken daily on schedule (actually in some people its half life is short enough to be twice daily). It is one of two good long term benzodiazepine choices, the other being Valium, which has a slightly greater half life.

The Ativan you took before may have reacted slightly differently, not every benzodiazepine is the same -- also the movement disorders or side effects your experiencing from an SSRI may be better quelled with Klonopin because I believe it and Valium are more suited in the direction of antispasmotics. All benzodiazepines work on 4 subreceptors, anxiolytic, sedative, antiepileptic, and antispasmotic, but some are better than others.

Some people never develop much tolerance, some do habituate over time -- but taken as your doctor directs, they are a safe medication and the only important thing is that you do not take it willy nilly but on schedule so that you aren't withdrawing between doses. And when the time comes if your doctor wants you to withdraw from it, do it slowly, and don't drop it like a lead brick. That's the only recipe for disaster from stopping a benzodiazepine.

Best wishes

And that's why I don't like benzo equivalence charts.

In terms of raw potency, the benzo equivalence chart that is the first one on Dr. Bob's list is fairly on the money from my experience -- we're talking about objective sedation and potency quality, not necessarily subjective "feeling" concepts which may be misleading because concepts like reaction time may be the same but one doesn't get the same relief from the agent.

I agree there can be some variance, but the second chart has some definite odd assumptions.

I would recommend ceasing the particular SSRI unless you are getting substantial benefit from it. Sounds like you are suffering a symptom correlating to hypodopaminergic NT. SSRI's actually reduce DA amounts.

Klonopin is a great drug, like all the benzo's. However, I personally would not recommend it's use to act against an SSRI induced s/effect. Unless it is only used short term.
Like I stated, maybe try another agent?

Good Luck!

Xanax XR (or CR) is getting some attention lately as a competitor to Klonopin. The XR helps the problem of Xanax's short half life and it shouldn't have the sepressing effects of Klonopin (for those who experience that).

And I am no smarter than anyone!

Thanks:) is it possible that I can communicate with his sister via Myspace?

It's so terrible at such a young age.
