I find it interesting that docs perscribe Abilify for BPI mania, but I am more considered BP II.
I just started taking Abilify and am hyper! Which is great in one sense, but difficult in another.I am on only 2mg. I skipped my dose last night (I read that it has a long half life of like 75 hours). I still slept great without it, but am hyper again today.
The nurse said to try some benedryl to come down.
Does anyone have experience with this hyperness going away in time?
Also - to chill out I took some Klonopin. Anyone take this combo? Or a Abilify/Xanax combo?

I know you are just starting the abilify, but have you or anyone else gained any weight on it? I seem to recall it being one known for weight gain.

I know I've been a lot hungrier on it!

So sorry Trish. So many times I've taken a med expecting one thing and getting some weird reaction I hadn't counted on. It's hard to know whether to just stop it, or adjust the dose, and if so up or down, or endure it hoping it goes away. Yikes. Been there. I feel for you. You aren't alone.

Hi,
I'm bipolar as well and experienced a similar reaction to abilify... its not as uncommon as u might think... anti-psychotics have antidepressant qualities and can easily 'overshoot' and cause one to spiral into hypomania/mania... I stopped sleepin on abilify... I recommend u try for at least another week and see if it subsides.. if not, try a classical mood stabilizer...

Hi, Trish,
I just started Abilify as well -- I am on 10mg, working up to 20mg. We were going up very quickly, and when I was on 15mg, I got REALLY hyper, was unable to sit still, etc. ... very uncomfortable. There is a technical name for it (akathesia I think?) and it is a known side effect of Abilify.
For me, it went away when we went back down to 10mg. Now we are increasing more slowly and hoping for the best.
Hope that was helpful ... hang in there, I know it's not the greatest feeling in the world.
This is the end of the thread.
