Today we discussed mood disorders, incluging major depression, atypical depression, seasonal affective disorder, dysthymic, BPI, BPII, and cyclothymia. The various antidepressants were listed and explained. The two MAOI's... Nardil and Parnate. Apparently they are the only two that exist. I was told this in two other classes too, one of which is taught by a PharmD, the other an MD. So nobody has heard of EMSAM. Ohhh, and of course, they pose a high risk of fatility due to hypertensive crisis, so they are horrible drugs...

Yeah definitely not first line but they seem to really help some people(just ask ace). I doubt I'll ever take one but it's nice to know these "big guns" are available if needed.
Interestingly, isoniazid (inh), used to treat tuberculosis, is also an maoi (in fact I believe the first antidepressants, maoi's, were discovered serrendipitously when TB patients had improved mood on these drugs). Moclebemide is also an maoi.
Is this an undergrad class? Hope you're doing well in it.

Oh I thought it was med school. But yeah, it's ridiculous the extent of knowledge many of our "experts" have of MAOIs. It's pretty discouraging.
May I ask what degree you're pursuing?
This is the end of the thread.
