how does a benzo affect a SSRI?Positive or negativ

Posted by qbsbrown on September 22, 2006, at 14:41:37

Just curious how they work or don't work together when taken in conjunction. I've heard some say that a benzo can squash serotonin, thus making your ssri not as effective.

I agree with Phillipa...the benzo seems to have an adjunctive effect on SSRI's for me.

I would also say adjunctive. Now the definition is how much benzodiazepine(s). Moderate dosage to reduce anxiety spikes that are created initially by SSRIs in people who have both anxiety and depression is a valid and oft used practice until one becomes accustomed to an SSRI and reduces or eliminates the benzodiazepine. High dosage, there may be some mild serotonin interaction but the real issue there isn't with 5HT, it is simply cognitive issues and central nervous system depression.

Well 1) you may have not had enough of a dose of benzodiazepine(s) -- the dosages I've heard you take are relatively low. 2) You just may be sensitive to (X) SSRI. 3) One can also try propranolol / nadolol / etc instead to relieve symptoms but not the underlying cause.

But again, I'm only posturing.

I used to love long scenic drives, even by myself. Now these days thoughts are going so fast, it is a pain in the butt to attempt. Even no matter how many benzos i pop down.

Doc thinks this could partially be BP II and wants to throw in lamictal. What do you think?

Yes. But it faded shortly after. I chased it upwards, but i think my downfall was not being on an AD during that time. Wasn't a great monotherapy for me.

only obstical is horrible insomnia. I just switched from celexa to effexor, i slept great on celexa, and now terrible on effexor so far. I wonder if i should go back to celexa and try the lamictal.

My doc wanted to try a different class of ADs

I'm going to ask her. My guess is that she'll want to give cymbalta a trial solo, before lamictal, so we can tell what is what. That's my guess.
