Hi
FYI only.
I have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes recently. Medications like Glucophage and Amaryl too were prescribed. After this incident, I switched from Zoloft to Prozac 20 mg daily.
Now surprisingly, I find my blood sugar levels absolutely normal even after stopping diabetes medications. I eat a healthy diet. Low fat biscuits plus an apple a day. Rice...paultry, fruit juice...still my blood glucose levels don't go higher than normal.
My conclusion is (I have confirmed this researching online): Fluoxetine at moderate doses can lower blood glucose levels. It can be a good choice for diabetics with depression.
Any comments?
Cheers

Two comments:
Often, early/mild Type II diabetes can be controlled with diet and exercise alone, so it may not all be down to the Prozac. (In which case, good on ya for your acheivement!)
The other comment is that I did read, a few years back, that Effexor raised glucose levels, so it wouldn't surprise me to hear that other serotinergic drugs affect it in various ways. Especially since most of serotonin's actions take place in the gut...
Congrats, though, on your improvement!

Hi Racer,
Thx for the comments, but sorry to correct you. I went through both fasting and oral glucose tolerance test today to find the results promising. Fasting is less than 100. OGTT is 130 exactly. Lab man assured me, I don't have diabetes at all. Isn't this amazing?
The only medications I take now is Prozac 20mg plus Amizulpride 50mg.
By the time when I checked my sugar levels (less than one month apart) it was sky high. As high as 486 (RBS) Now, right after three weeks on Prozac it has come down to 130 (Postprandial) Would you believe it?
One more thing to add: I don't follow a diabetic diet. I eat plenty of candys and fruits for the past week to test whether my body tolerates them or not. Luckily it does.
Or could it be a stress-induced hyperglycemia? I am very much doubtful. I was in a very stressful situation when I discovered my elevated blood sugar levels. Can anyone help?
Cheers

How would you rate your depression and anxiety while taking Zoloft versus Prozac?

Hi Scott,Almost same, with less sexual side effects. Prozac's effects are more subtle.
