Life Insurance with a mental illness - help

Posted by DavidLA on September 4, 2006, at 21:37:54

I've been looking for term life insurance and I've been surprised to find that having Depression puts me 2 ratings classes below where I would have been otherwise. This makes it more than I can afford. I'm very healthly and cannot believe the cost I'm being quoted - all just because of Depression.

Does anyone have have any personal experiences getting life insurance with a mental illness?

Any suggestions on how to get a good rate?

Many Thanks,
DLA

Forget it. Only very health people that never see a doc can get life insurance, unless:

You get life insurance during the enrolment period on taking a new job. At least here in the states if you take benifits up front when you get hired, pre-existing conditions do not count. Wait till later and pre-existing conditions do count.

If you have a credit card with a major bank, you might get an offer for life insurance from them. They actually give you $1,000 in coverage just for having the card, then you can buy more - and there were no questions! There were the standard exclusions, mostly based on whether you flew a plane, plus the 2 year exemption clause for suicide (this can vary by state).

I know this doesn't help in the near-future, you'd have to wait, but it was a good option for us.
