Can Buspar worsen anxiety?

Posted by Shell on September 2, 2006, at 23:47:47

My anxiety has become markedly worse in the last month. I now have daily episodes where I become short of breath and my chest gets tight, which I almost never had before. My pdoc told me it was a fairly common reaction to Buspar -- some people actually experience an increase in their anxiety while taking it. He told me to stop taking it and that the anxiety should go back to at least my pre-Buspar levels.

Has anyone else had this experience with Buspar? I don't remember reading anything about it and can't find anything online about increased anxiety as a side effect.

Any medication can worsen anxiety, sometimes you have to adjust the dose, other times you have to let urself adapt to it,and unfortunatly sometimes a drug ends up simply not being the right one for you.

I know a lot of people who HATED klonopin,i mean hated it when they started, klonopin when u first use it can in some worsen all symptoms, anxiety, depression, mood swings,i know it did for me,i had to adjust the dose.

Also always take in as a factor any other drugs your using if you are,as that definatly can play a role in the change of effect a drug has on a person.

Good luck/

Willyee's right: Any med can worsen anxiety

If you read the post above, Willyee is exactly right. Some meds can make your emotional challenges, whether it be anxiety or depression or whatever, worse rather than better.

I took Buspar and felt nothing. I took Prozac and felt worse. I took Klonopin and felt relaxed. I took Seroquel and could sleep. Every med affects everyone differently. I would just tell your doctor that you wish to try something else for anxiety.

The good news about anxiety meds such as benzos, you will know same day whether or not they work, therefore dont have to wait 4-6 weeks like with the SSRIs.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Buspar is metabolized into a substance called 1-PP. This metabolite acts very much like Remeron in that it is a NE alpha-2 antagonist. It can increase the amount of norepinephrine synthesized and released by neurons. For some people, this produces anxiety and can actually worsen depression in some cases.
