maoi/parnate and protein powder

Posted by xcendo on August 17, 2006, at 13:31:02

going on parnate. i know it's been covered before and suggested against, but wasn't the main reason that some powders have amino acids that contain tyramine?

my optimum nutrition 100% gold standard whey contains NO tyramine, but some tryptophan.

i really need to continue taking in supplemental protein. during college it's going to be nearly impossible to meet my protein requirements just through trips to the dining hall, and between rugby and outdoor track practices i'm going to need it to maintain muscle, let alone make any progress whatsoever.

thank you :)

Hi,
I can't find any newer studies on the augmentation of MAOIs with tryptophan in humans. The older studies urge caution. I would find out the exact amount of tryptophan, ask my doctor and do a lot of research before taking it. Better safe than sorry.
Good luck,
Jedi

Abstract 1:
Am J Psychiatry. 1985 Dec;142(12):1487-8.
Two cases of hypomania following the addition of L-tryptophan to a monoamine oxidase inhibitor.
Goff DC.
The combination of L-tryptophan and a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) has been reported to be an effective antidepressant regimen. Neurotoxicity has previously been associated with this combination. The author presents two cases of hypomania following the addition of L-tryptophan to an MAOI.

Abstract 2:
Am J Psychiatry. 1985 Apr;142(4):491-2.
Toxic reactions to the combination of monoamine oxidase inhibitors and tryptophan.
Pope HG Jr, Jonas JM, Hudson JI, Kafka MP.
The combination of monoamine oxidase inhibitors and tryptophan--a recognized antidepressant regimen--has been reported to cause behavioral or neurologic toxicity. The authors present eight cases of delirious syndromes apparently attributable to this combination of agents.

Abstract 3:
Can J Psychiatry. 1985 Oct;30(6):434-6.
Myoclonus, hyperreflexia and diaphoresis in patients on phenelzine-tryptophan combination treatment.
Levy AB, Bucher P, Votolato N.
Three cases are presented on patients on an MAOI who developed a transient syndrome of myoclonus, hyperreflexia, jaw quivering, teeth chattering and diaphoresis after L-Tryptophan was added. Caution is advised when considering the addition of a serotonergic agent to MAOI's.

This is exactly the question I'm looking for an answer for. I love to lift weights and need to supplement a protein powder to build muscle. I still don't have the answer, but am looking hard for one. I'll let you know what I find out. I've heard two people say they use protein powders while on Nardil on this board. However, that is NOT a recommendation to use it. As Jedi said, with these meds you really have to do your own research. I know whey protein (ON Gold Whey has about 400+ mgs of L-Tryptophan in each 30gram serving. I believe these aminos compete with each other when it comes to absorption, and what is listed and how much you absorb is probably debatable. I'm not sure though so be cautious.

Jedi,

Thanks again for the links. You've been an invaluable source of info. Regards. H. Upmann

There are dietary protocols that you can follow to change the absorption of L-Tryptophan into the brain. I don't remember exactly what they are (google?) but it's something like eating carbs before ingesting L-Tryptophan will hinder the transport of L-Tryptophan into the brain. These protocols are usually stated with the aim of increasing L-Tryptophan absorption, but of course you could do the opposite to hinder the absorption.
