How do you ask for them? (ie so as not to sound suspicious-- or at least so as not to imagine that you might)

I have terrible trouble sleeping, and can't take seroquel, which is the only thing so far that somewhat works for me.

Ive' thought vaguely about seconal, which is a barbiturate, isn't it?

I dont' know much about them, but had thought they were under a cloud, or maybe not even available.

Did you ask, or did your pdoc think of it himself?

Matt have you been drinking the energy drinks again? That could definitely be it. Love Phillipa

That's true- I heard "no caffeine after 12 noon" to make sure it's gone by night. I've noticed that caffeine can seem like it's not working at all- until it's bedtime.

The caffeine? I think the "12 oclock rule" is mostly for people who are truely sensitive and have insomnia problems- apparently it can stay in the body for a very long time.

since this thread was 'down the line,' i didn't have all your med/s info.

re: the 12 oclock rule: i have 'fully progressed' ('addiction' 'treatment' 'model' terminology) caffeineism. the 12 oclock rule will always then backfire for me. i do NOT have add or adhd, (i have mdd), but i can still fall asleep, even while drinking caffeine. if i stopped early to much earlier in the day, the withdrawal of the caffeine would then cause me to not be able to sleep/ stay asleep. i would awaken countless times.

i have made a firm choice to never stop caffeine, as it is the only stim/ 'poor man's ad' i can tolerate GI side-effects wise any longer.

having said this, i have never once tried an energy drink. they scare me for some unknown reason.

re: tuinal or seconal, both have a very high 'addiction' potential. i, too, was not aware that any doc would still prescibe them for psych purposes only - here in the usa. i would be unwilling to go down that particular slippery slope, even if available, however tempting. seconal - i tried once back in my college hippy days. it caused major nausea. i saw many throw up on, including me (one pill). i can count on less than 2 hands the # of times i've thrown up - lifetime.

Pulse do you have anxiety? If not maybe that's why? I'm afraid of coffee and I used to drink a whole pot. The last time I had a bad panic attack was after a Starbucks iced coffee. Come to find out my thyroid was messed up again. Love Phillipa ps I can't forget it through hence the fear.

hi phillipa,

this year, for 1st time since 1979, i would have to say i DO have nervous variety typical depression. so, yes, now, some anxiety. it fluctuates, though. it was very bad late last fall.
it is based on life events - not endogenous.

i had not had panic attacks since 1987 (age 35); i have now had 1 since october, but was somehow able to not go into the old obsessive thinking that i would then be sure to have more. i've had no agoraphobia since 1979, but it is on my mom's side of family - they always said make sure you get out of the house - no matter what - once a day. they were right, i've found.

just fyi, although i used to be able to handle the little cold w/milk starbucks you can get at drugstores, i could never once handle a single hot, made-to-order starbucks at a bookstore/ other.

my canadian friend tells me that the tim horton's coffee shops are friendlier re: anxiety

I would not take Tuinal. My doctor is barbiturate anti. Barbiturates make your liver bad.

I may consider seconal, but when i have been staying up nights, no stimulants, just having the best time in the world.

I do take 5mg of Zyprexa.

Matt

I'm only about average in sensitivity to caffeine, but since I started limiting caffeine to before noon, it's made a huge difference to me. Honestly, caffeine does more to wreck my sleep than any of the stims I've taken. I can take Provigil, or Ritalin, or Dexedrine, or whatever at 3 or 4 in the afternoon, and sleep fine. But caffeine?

And that's from someone who can't drink regular coffee at all -- I either drink decaf, so half the caffeine of regular coffee, or more commonly I get caffeine in colas. (Diet cola, really...)

Then again, there's my mother, who falls asleep as soon as you turn down the lights -- don't go to a movie with her, although she seems to stay awake at the opera -- and drinks coffee by the pot.

I should say about "12 o'clock" : it's an extreme position and not necesary for everyone by any means. My brother and I are both very sensitive to caffeine, which allegedly can stay active in anyone for 6-8 hours- and we've both done much better by cutting caffeine by noon. But we are extremely sensitive and we know it.

I've got a friend who can have a jumbo cup of coffee at night and promptly fall asleep and stay asleep all night, no problem.

Interestingly, when I tried that "5 hour" ritalin I could easily detect it as much as 8-10 hours later. We're all different.
