Does anyone know if any of these are contraindicated when used in conjunction with an MAOI. Since there doesn't seem to be much of a margin for error with these meds I thought I'd ask here for an opinion. Thanks. H. Upmann

Hey!
Hmmm....most things seem to be contraindicated with MAOIs. But that isn't to say that its not 'safe' to take them. I sometimes think we take the precautionary principle too far (myself included).
I can only speak of rhodiola (I'm taking it myself) and this is the best article so far that deals with the herb:
http://www.herbalgram.org/herbalgram/articleview.asp?a=2333
It indicates that Rhodiola rosea hasn't had any adverse drug-herb interactions yet - but thats not to say that it doesn't happen, it just hasn't yet. And in all fairness, I'm not too sure that *anyone* would be comfortable prescribing something like rhodiola with a MAOI. Thats assuming you are seeing someone who has actually heard of Rhodiola! I honestly don't know if pdocs are using Rhodiola with prescription ADs. I think some innovative pdocs are..but I have no idea who/what ADs with etc etc. Just some rumours!
I hope this has been of some (albeit very limited!) help!
Kind regards
Meri

Thanks Meri,
I wasn't really expecting any doctors to know. Just anectdotal evidence. I don't even bother asking the docs or pharmacists. They all just grab their handheld PDR. I can do that myself. Thanks for the input though. I do appreciate it. Upmann

Meri,
What brand of Rhodiola do you find to be the most effective. I know there's a million brands out there using different extracts, strengths, etc., if they contain rhodiola at all. Thanks again for the article. I appreciate it.

Hiya, I use New Chapter Rhodiolaforce 100mg. Its very good. Its the only brand I've tried. But according to Mistermindmasta (another rhodiola fan) who has tried 6 or 7 different brands, NewChapter is the best. Apparently other brands aren't so consitent from batch to batch and things like that.
