how sedating would you say seroquel is?

Posted by xbunny on August 8, 2006, at 17:19:09

In about a week I am seeing my psychiatrist and he wants to change my meds. I am second guessing him but I have a feeling he will want to switch me to an atypical antipsychotic from the two typicals I currently take, the three choices I seem to have if that is his plan are, seroquel, abilify and clozapine. Clozapine is right out, theres no way I would consider it at the moment (and I doubt neither would he). So that leaves seroquel or abilify. Both seem to be quite effective but have their drawbacks, Abilify causes akathasia which I think I already have (see my post above) and would like to avoid and seroquel is sedating. So how sedating in your experience would you say seroquel is? Im talking at psychosis doses here. A comparison which would really help me would be versus the amount of sedation from say dothiepin or mirtazapine both of which are at my boundary of acceptable sedation.
Thanks for reading,
Best regards Bunny

Sorry , I can not compare Seroquel to those medicines b/c I have not taken them. but I took Seroquel for a few days at 100 mg at night ( starting dose) and I know that I have never slept so hard in my life and that I was so sedated during the day I could not do anything. But I have read and heard that sometimes these side effects go away, but I couldn;t tolerate it.. Also there are a lot of people on this board who have been greatly helped by it , so I would definitly get as many opinions as you can.

Good luck,

JB

I know someone who is taking 800mg of Seroquel who does not experience sedation. I tried it once at dosages above 100mg, and likewise, did not experience sedation. I might be wrong, but I get the impression that this drug might be less sedating at higher dosages. Of course, you will probably experience sedation in the beginning.

The akathisia-like side effects produced by Abilify most often disappear after two weeks. Of course, with your history, this might not be the case, but you won't know unless you try. I don't know if what Abilify produces is true akathisia, though.

Why are you not considering Zyprexa?

I took Zyprexa for nearly a year it was only moderately effective, made my behaviour 'robotlike' (kinda hard to describe - like I was reacting and not thinking clearly) and also was ineffective for my mood. The weight gain was a problem too.

I have also taken Risperdal which even at 6mg wasnt effective and but left me very out of it.

Amisulpride was not effective either, though it was good for depression and anxiety - maybe I wasnt taking enough.

I have taken Abilify (5 mg/d) for a week now, and still haven't experienced any akathisia.

Hi Buns

Would you be interested in trying it again? It only works for the positive symptoms at high doses.

I dont know what I am going to do, I guess I will have to wait and see what the psychiatrist says. I am trying not to think about the whole thing. I am desperately afraid. I am finding my grasp on my mental health getting weaker of late and I am quite worried about upsetting it further. I have alot of worries at the moment, awhile ago you may recall I tried stopping the flupenthixol I have restarted it now. After a few weeks I was feeling "unwell" and was experiencing painful muscle spasms in my legs and chest. Since restarting the flupenthixol these have subsided.
Not happy, Buns
