One of the best combinations I took was actually lithium and ritalin. I don't know if a doctor would prescribe that again, seems like a longshot.

Why did you wonder if a dr. would prescribe that again? Are you still taking them?
I weaned off all meds last year (except .25 clonazepam for sleep.) Now I realize I need them again. I will disappoint family if they find out I have gone on Prozac 20 mg and Ritalin 5 mg along with the clonazepam. However, they keep commenting how well I am doing. I know the doctor prescribed the ritalin to give the prozac a starting boost. Now I find that it is the only thing that gives me motivation, reduces fatigue, improves concentration, etc. and don't want to give it up. My question: What has been your experience with ritalin? Long term effects? Efficacy? Dangers--for 60 yr. old? Stigma? Thanks for any info you have. Jane

Doctors around this part of the country are funny. They rarely listen to you, and most of the time if you suggest one thing, they do the opposite.
Anyhow, that amount of ritalin at your age is probably fine. There are some distrubing studies about how ritalin can affect brain growth and development, so it is an additional reason I have strayed away from it, but at your age, I don't think these things would be a factor.

If your brain were developing (ie up to about age 20 or so), it might be a concern.
My feeling is that one should use what helps you. What you need--is whichever combination of drugs helps you function at the best level you can.
I'm sorry your family has a hang-up about these medications, but don't let that prevent you from doing what's best for you.
Maybe keep your decision private, or only share it with people who understand and can support you.
