lamictal no effect on sex?? what a joke!

Posted by shy_gal on August 5, 2006, at 9:49:41

I've been on lamictal for over a month now and have progressivly watched my body go from sexually awake to completely anorgasmic! This stuff works for depression but the hype about it is completely ridiculous. I have been on a very small dose of lamictal, only 5 mg coz my body is sensitive to meds and it's like im dead from the waist down. That was my 14th psych medication. I've been on everything from anti'ds to anti psychs to "mood stabilisers" and benzos which are the only things that work for me when i take them as needed. right now I'm about ready to give up and chuck this whole med thing in......I find my anxiety and depression is lifted much better on nootropics and klonopin and i dont have to give up my sex life and live as a nun. Hey I may be more unhappy but at least there's one area of my life I can enjoy.

My doctor has had a great deal of success recently combining Lamictal with Wellbutrin to treat stubborn cases of depression. Wellbutrin is sometimes used to reverse the sexual side effects of antidepressants. It might be worthwhile for you to explore the addition of Wellbutrin to your treatment regime.

cheers scott,
Only problem with that is I've been on wellbutrin before and my OCD and anxiety were out of control plus i was having panic attacks on a daily basis. I stay away from medications that work more specifically on noradrenalin now. I had the exact same response with reboxetine.

Ugh.

I had a feeling you were going to say that. Damn. I was hoping the Klonopin would prevent that from happening.

The side effect you are experiencing with Lamictal is unusual. I wonder if it would resolve at higher dosages? Things like that happen sometimes. If not, and it is really working well for you, you might consider augmenting it with a dopamine agonist like pramepexole, ropinerole, or cabergoline. It might further improve your depression and help recover some of your sexual function.

How high have you gone with Lamictal?

Just thinking out loud...

I have no sexual desire now for the years I'm been on AD's I've just accepted it. I know I'd love to have it back but I'm just surviving now. I think the depression has a lot to do with it. Love Phillipa ps I have a very low libido to begin with due to my upbringing and first husband instilling in me that sex was bad

scott,

I've only gone up to 5 mg's coz the higher i go the worse my anxiety gets....I have huge amounts of anxiety crippeling i'd say. and any drug that causes noradrenaline to get going then i basically loose that plot even though lamictal isnt sposed to do that....but yeah i'm coming off it now and going back on picamilon

Hi Shy_gal,

I'm sorry for your problems.

Lamictal has always boosted my libido. It does the same thing for a lot of folks too.

Don't forget that depression itself "destroys" sexuality.

Good luck!

I was only on lamictal for a short time at a low dose and quit due to all kinds of weird intolerable side effects. One of them was complete numbing of sexual function.

I'm on lamictal but I can't say I've had any marked change in labido from it. I'm on so many meds its hard to know which one has the numbing effect, but thats what I feel numb. Not to be graffic but I have to psych myself into the act, fake it till you make it kinda thing

Yay I'm of lamictal now, all sexual functioning has returned and it's odd coz im feeling more like my moods are better, Im no longer feeling 5 different emotions every day, think i'd rather stick with benzos as needed and worry about the rest of my problems when I see my psychiatrist or they become unbareable. But as my mother always says don't borrow trouble. :P
