retinal detachment effexor xr

Posted by jag4022 on August 4, 2006, at 11:09:39

i started taking 75mg of effexor xr in june,2002. in sept,2002 I had a severe retinal detachment. this casued permanent damage to my sight. the doctors said that effexor xr was not a reason for this detachment. my 21 year old daughter started taking effexor xr in jan,2004 and in march ,2004 she also has a retinal detachment. luckily she suffered no permanent eye damage. she no longer takes effexor xr. we both wore glasses but her prescription was much higher than mine. even after my daughter's incident the doctors said that effexor xr was not related. has anyone else ever suffered a detachment or other eye problem from taking effexor xr?

Although a common factor in both instances is Effexor XR, so is something that has a stronger influence on eyesight - Heridity.

My time on Effexor was short, but while adjusting to the meds I did notice that it was harder to get focus on things. My eyes would cross and stuff and focus would be genuinely harder to obtain, but only for the first couple of days after changing a dosage.

My initial response would be "No, Effexor didn't cause it.", but Effexor //could have// acted as a catalyst, since it causes a minor problem with focus. And I use the words "could have" very loosely.

If anything, though, genes are probably to blame for this coincidence.

I have floaters. No the detachment was not due to a med. Have you seen a retinal guy? Love Phillipa

Maybe increased blood pressure from the Effexor could precipitate retinal detachment? Also, here is a list of reported adverse drug reactions from the British National Formulary. Look for eye disorders:

My mother had retinal detachment and there is a definite inherited tendency. I'd monitor your blood pressure carefully and see what other predisposing factors you may have.
