I'm wondering if Xyrem (sodium oxybate - a different chemical name for GHB) approved by the FDA in '05 for narcolepsy and cataplexy (manufactured by Orphan Pharmaceuticals), has ever been studied or considered as a treatment option for any mental illness such as anxiety or depression.
I remember when this was a supplement you could buy OTC at GNC. Apparently kids would take it recreationally with alcohol and go into respiratory failure from time to time. That led to it quickly getting yanked from the shelves.
I'm thinking it would have great potential to study for anxiety, and was wondering if anyone has heard anything in this regard. I believe they were studying opiates in the treatment of anxiety and depression. Curious to see if this will be something worthwhile in the future. If anyone has any information on this topic it would be appreciated. I know this was a schedule I med at one time after the whole date rape drug stigma was attached to this chemical. It's currently CIII. I'm not sure how addictive it would be really (I know what the CIII states for addictiveness, but androgens are also CIII and what a bunch of non-sense that is). If anyone has heard anything about the possible beneficial effects this would have for anxiety it would be interesting to hear. Thanks again.

I don't think so. It would be dose dependent. It was a very popular recreational drug, and well I'm sure there's no fun in passing out. I really wish this was studied. I do believe there is a lot of untapped potential in this med.

I used/absused GHB for quite a while
I think that if your very careful its no more toxic than most other Psych drugs.
Unfortunatly theres a lot of Misinformation about it circulating around the net.
Either its too positive or too negative. It does work great for Social Anxiety
I was stupid and ended up hurting myself quite a bit with GHB.I wish there'd been some unbiased information I could have refered to.
I do think it does have a lot of potential, and its very frustrating that it hasn't been studied propally!

Dont you remeber reffering to this before,i posted tonds of information about ghb.
It is a non toxic drug, worries should include its potentcy and abuse potential, not the fact that someone choose to use it in a crime, achlol itself to this very day it the biggest date rape drug there is,the term is nonsense, ghb has no buisness being in a bar atmosphere.
As far as therputic goes, its probuably too powerful to use for depression as it requires various dosing by each individual to find the right dose, and this includes unfortunatly times when one might take too much, and it will apear bad but more than likly they are just, well high, ghb unless at extreme doses will simply turn to H20 and be excreted through ones urine.

Dont get me wrong,im saying to me it inst a crimnial drug, however it is a EXTREMLY serious drug to use,the dose curve is well...
Lets put it this way, lets say 1.25 grams you feel pretty good, you debate, and go for 1.30,just a wee more, you can possably A opened the right door and feel a tad better,or believe it or not that small adjustment in dose depending on certain factors, food in ur tummy etc can have you gone from feeling good and possably heading out for the night,to burying your face in a pill swearing youll never touch it again.
Its a drug if being used theputicaly needs to A have been researched extensivly,.....B in my view respected......C again in my view not used unless one has klonopin on hand.....C In very small increments, with long time periods in between possable re-dosing.......and last with someone arond who knows youre trying this.
It is not a drug you simply take. This is what id much rather see GHB regarded as unfit for in terms of anti depressant use,and not the fact some teens had some god only knows what in purity of ghb in dumped unmeasured in a water bottle taken with what one can assume is alcholol,OR teens choosing to use this as their tool of choice in a hiddeous crime called rape,i mean was the situation one in which if ghb was not available to them they would have went bowling instead, lol i believe that was used as a guid to create way for the ten fold increase of xyrem.Either way,no offense phillipa, but i know you have a small tendacy to be a little anxious on a new drug lol,as wel all do yes,i would place you on the list of the last people to touch the stuff,oh and my tone is playful here as im reading it and can see how it can be seen otherwise.
This is the end of the thread.
