Alternatives to Celexa

Posted by glitterwmn2006 on August 1, 2006, at 17:51:25

For the most part, Celexa has worked well for my depression and anxiety; however, with 40 LB weight gain and total sexual dyfunction that is uining my relationship , I need alternatives.
I have tried what I think is all of them: Prozac (bad nighmares & SexSide effects), PAxil( weight gain & sleepiness), Effexor (zombified), Cymbalta (zombified), Wellbutrin (phsycho , paranoid) Lexapro (same as celea).....Is there any hope or must I remain fat and sexless??????

You didn't mention Zoloft, but my guess is that you would have the same problems you do with Celexa because they are both SSRIs. However, it is a good drug that might be worth trying. You could try the EMSAM patch, I suppose. I do not believe this drug is associated with weight gain, but you would be taking an MAOI. Desipramine and Vivactil are two tricyclics that have a low incidence of weight gain, but they have many other side effects. They are not too bad as far as sexual side effects, however, because they are not SSRIs.

You could also try adding a stimulant to the Celexa such as Ritalin that might help with your weight issues and perhaps have some positive sexual effects.

You could cut back on the Celexa. Say if you were on 40, take 20 and add something else such as Wellbutrin at a low dose, i.e. 100 or 150 mg. It is often used to help with diminished libido. I was on Celexa, Wellbutrin and Adderall and found this combo was pretty good for awhile. I would try this before going off Celexa all together, esp. if it has helped some with your depression. It's always better to add other meds to modify the response rather than have to start all over again. Good luck.

Thank you so much. Great suggestion!!!!

I was on Addrall as well. How much are you on? I found myself a bit agitated all the time at only 5 mg x 2? so, I stopped. Perhaps I should go back on? It really helped ADD, but I was a real uh--female dog.....more like a female pit bull...

Glitter,
I was on Adderall XR 20 mg in the AM. I didn't want to stop all my meds but in order to try Marplan (MAO) again I had to stop Celexa, Wellbutrin and Adderall. Now I miss it and believe it helped me with managing overwhelming
demands of life. I really believe my depression comes from the inability to handle stressful events, something along the lines of not being able to turn my brain off or even slow it down. I overreact to everything and lose the ability to ignore stuff that used to not bother me. I start sleeping less, talk about work nonstop, cannot relax because my mind never stops. Sometimes I can see what's starting to happen and sometimes I don't and I end up in a major depression.

So what I' finding is that even though I haven't been diagnosed w ADD, Adderall helps my brain sort through all the crap and helps me priotize things so that they don't overwhelm me altogether.

Just thought I'd give you some info on what Adderall helped me with. Since I'll probably stay on Marplan longer, perhaps I can add another stimulant like Provigil which I believe can be combined with a MAO.

SG.
