I have had severe anxiety for going on 10 years. Im on disability because the problem is so bad. I have tried all the ssri's a couple of the maoi's, ect treatment..........etc
Those meds mixed with benzos seem to make my aniety worse plus just make me feel like crap from all the side effects.
My question is is possible and safe just to use Benzos to manage my anxiety along with my beta blocker?
Take the anti deprssants meds out of the mix...
any thoughts?
Mark

Some doctors are ok with this esp if you have tried other alternitives.
If benzo's seem to be the only meds that help, you may consider certain anticonvulsants (if you have not already).

Same here no AD works and the side effects are horrible. I can take luvox but it does nothing for me. I just started lamictal. And the pdoc said to do whatever I wanted to with the luvox. I've weaned down form l50mg to 50mg in a couple of weeks . And cut the valium from 20mg to l5mg in the same time frame. So yes I think it's fine. Love Phillipa

I had a doc who let me use only a benzo for three years and it successfully treated my anxiety without any dreaded benzo pitfalls. I no longer use a benzo but in certain cases, they can certainly a great "aloneish" option. I think this especially can be an workable treatment if one has anxiety as a stand alone diagnosis without cormorbid states.

I know, I would have never thought it would work for anxiety, either. However, I tried it on a whim and it was the first med out of 30+ over nine years that ever touched my anxiety. You will know the first 1-2 days whether or not it will work for you, not 4 weeks.

Yes. Take a look at remedyfind.com under anxiety disorders-lots of people just use benzos, as long as, was mentioned, you aren't depressed as well. Good luck!

i have severe anxiety and take klonopin alone. once you get over the initial side affects(mainly drowsiness for me), it works great w/o the anti d's. the only anti d that helped was effexor w/ the klonopin but other anti d's made me feel worse. hope you find one~let us know.

I have taken xanax for about 20 years and done fine on it without increasing or developing tolerance. In fact went from 3 mg. down to 1.5 or 1.75mg. It is the best for my GAD and if you are not depressed there is no need for an antidepressant in my opinion. I am no doctor, but only makes sense. I've seen the best doctors full professor at Harvard and expert on benzodiazepine. He recommend I stay on it indefinitely. Best of luck to you. I say go with the benzo and forget the SSRI.

if only anxiety is the problem a betablocker (the one you take) plus benzo is better than AD plus benzo. I personally believe that anxiety disorders are very often comorbid with depression (maybe a minor depression you're even not aware).

I took beta blockers for anxiety and they made me depressed, but then again that happens with benzo's as well

Not necessarily. Xanax has a slight mood elevating property. I took a beta blocker and it knocked me out. But now they say anxiety and depression come together. Love Phillipa

What I meant to say is it happens to me. I get depressed from everything, if it feels good I crash and feel depressed for days. Its just the way I am, thats why I don't do anything except drink coffee.

propranolol easily penetrates the blood-brain barrier and can reach the brain. Because of that you are sedated maybe even depressed. Nadolol is much less likely to reach the brain thus you are less sedated and less depressed. But it is possible that the sedating central beta-receptor blocking properties of propranolol is a part of a pseudo- anxiolitic action.
