Weight - SSNRIs vs SSRIs

Posted by chiron on July 28, 2006, at 23:21:20

I count myself lucky in that usually SSRIs have more of a weight-loss effect for me. So now that I've been slowly gaining weight while on Cymbalta, I didn't even think that the meds could be to blame. Could a SSNRI cause weight gain while SSRIs cause weight loss?

I have seen SSRI's do both in different people- my mom initially lost about 10 pounds on Paxil but after being on it 3 years, she ended up gaining nearly 40 pounds.

I have a close friend on Effexor who lost 15 pounds (and she was already thin) and can't seem to gain ONE pound on Effexor and yet, some other people gain 10 pounds in a few months on it.

I don't understand it- how can some gain and some lose.. I guess it just affects chemistry and appetite differently as well.

I've always heard wellbutrin causes weight LOSS and yet a lady from my church has gained 20 pounds on Wellbutrin.

Go figure.

My cousin who is a pharmacist told me that SSRI's tend to lower dopamine which typically will cause you to crave carbs.

Not sure how that works, but that's what she explained to me.

Yeah, anything could happen. I was only on Paxil for a couple of weeks, but gained about 2 lbs per week w/o diet change. Same thing with Buspar. I gained 20 lbs in 4 months on Wellbutrin. Effexor was the worst, 20 lbs in 6 weeks. Seems I can't take anything unless I want to be very overweight! So I don't, just go without AD's for now and accept that I'll probably have the depression for life.

Same person gain on one, then lose on another?

Thank you for your responses. I am aware that some people gain weight on some antidepressants & some lose...but is there anyone who has gained on one drug, and then lost weight on another?
Thanks!

I've never lost weight long term on any AD, but I have lost weight initially, only to gain much more back after a longer period, on a couple of drugs. Including Effexor and Cymbalta and Prozac. Initial weight loss, and then long term gain. You may be experiencing something similar, depending on how long you stayed on SSRIs and which ones you've taken.

As for losing it, the only thing that any doctor I've talked to recently can say is Topomax. I've read some studies showing Glucophage is also helpful, but haven't heard from any doctors on the subject.

Sorry, I know that's not exactly what you were asking for. I hope it's helpful anyway.

I gained 60Lbs on Zoloft, then lost the same 60 LBS on Serzone over a period of 6 years (3 to gain and 3 to lose). No change in diet nor exercise.

Serzone stopped working and I went back to Zoloft and gained 50 lbs back over 24 months.

On Cymbalta and Wellbutrin currently and have lost 15 pounds from the high over about 15 months.

I lost a little weight on lexapro. With Paxil and Effexor I stayed about the same.

When I took Cymbalta I gained weight (about 10 pounds in a year) and seemed to have gained some of it when going off.
