I'm a 24 year old male that has been battling with severe depression since age 8. At that age suicide first entered my mind and has hardly left it since. I self-medicated with marijuana, LSD, cocaine, heroine, and everything else I could get my hands on, from age 14-22. I started taking Effexor XR about a year and a half ago leaving illegal drugs behind. At first Effexor made me angry and hostile to everyone around. I started fights with strangers. After two weeks I adjusted and I felt "normal" for the first time. That lasted maybe, nine months. I had to keep raising my dose every month or so. I'm taking 300 mg a day now and feel like I did before I started taking it. What happens when the drugs don't work? What happens when therapy does nothing for the pain? WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU'RE SO F**KING TIRED OF FEELING THIS WAY?!?!?!? What's left when it never gets better?

If you've only tried one medication, there are still many options.
Hopefully, working with a doctor, you may be able to find an alternative medication or treatment.
If you do it right, you may be able to avoid some nasty effexor withdrawl.
Some people find a combination of effexor and another drug may help.
You might reduce your effexor and add an SSRI or wellbutrin.
You may also find that some alternative treamtents can help.
I have been on every medication, and am finding a lot of help with omega-3 fatty acids.
Stick around.

Well, I should have mentioned that I was forced to take medication as a youth. I've been on Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Lithium, Welbutrin, Zyprexa, Trazadone, BuSpar, and Depakote at various times. As I remember, I didn't care for the side effects of just about all of those drugs. Welbutrin didn't bother me but at the time I was taking four other medications as well. I still have trouble convincing myself that taking a medication is any different than doing drugs. They both provide a false sense of happiness.

You are right, they do provide a false sence of happiness.
I suppose the question comes down to whether you acutally experience less happiness than a regular person, in which case, a false sence of happiness is like false teeth, cheap and bothersome, yet better than nothing.
You could look to some alternatives, I too have tried all the SSRI's, remeron, trazadone, lithium, depakote, a few TCA's, and have found more help with some alternatives.
