I am currently taking 300 mg lamictal and I am 14 weeks pregnant.
About 3 nights out of 7 now I wake in the middle of the night and I'm unable to get back to sleep for 3 hours or so. I'm up again today, and that was even after getting some exercise (2 hours gardening and walking in the dog park).
I have klonopin sitting in a drawer unused, as my understanding is that it is teratogenic (sp?). Some of my readings indicate that the major risk of birth defects is only in the first trimester. Would it be ok to take this drug in second trimester? My pdoc is reluctant to change meds now. I would really like some unbroken sleep. Drug suggestions (and other suggestions) are welcome.
ps - is this a sign that my lamictal is becoming less effective? should i insist on blood draws (pdoc also hesitates) at next prenatal appt to check blood levels?

Unisom, the OTC sleep aid, is safe to use during pregnancy. So is Benadryl. See if you can take either of these. Unisom (not the soft gel, but small tablet, which is the drug that is safe) can even be split into smaller pieces to suit your needs. And another large benefit is that the Unisom can decrease nausea and is often used just to combat that. I took Unisom throughout all of PGs and babies are just fine.
Good luck,
Colleen

thank you colleen. I have taken 2 doses of unisom in the last week (trying not to get the baby hooked) and I feel enormously better. there is some conflicting information out there about the safety of unisom in pregnancy, but i figure if it's approved in Canada (as part of diclectin) for nausea during pregnancy then i should be cool

this is so interesting, i just talked to my cousin this weekend who is in his residency doing family practice right now and he has a few ob patients, i told him about my nausea and such and he said one of the things he's given patients is unisom!
so this is great!
