Prozac start up headaches-do they go away?

Posted by janeB on June 6, 2006, at 12:41:26

I started on 20 mg prozac 6 days ago. Just have a dull headache most of the time. Can I anticipate it going away eventually? Before I started prozac I awoke with a severe headache almost every morning that went away with tylenol. Now I am having the dull headache all day.
Thanks, Jane

Never met an antidepressant yet that where the headache doesn't subside. I've had some that gave me no start up headaches and some that have taken 3 weeks to get rid of, but never one that didn't go away ever.

I started Prozac at 5 mg and it gave me a headache for a couple days and when I increase the dose, another couple days of headaches. Not a really bad headache (but then, is there a good headache?)...but they do go away. If you'd started lower than 20 mg, maybe it would have been better...but they'll go away.

Would it help if I took it every other day for a while? Thanks for the assurance that they will go away.

I suggest a lower dose of prozac to start it is activating. Many people do better on low dose prozac. That's what they say anyway. Love Phillipa

Every other day, even every third day for a couple weeks-Prozac has a long, LONG half life and so your serum drug concentations won't be exactly plunging (like, not at all)-but it might give your system a little extra time to adjust.

Bassman when prozac first came out that's exactly what my pdoc said. The first day on 20mg I wallpapered a foyer, second day was anxious, third day the worst panic I've know. So I ditched it. The pdoc begged me to take every three but I refused. Now I wish I had taken the med every three day. Love Phillipa

Phillipa, I started Prozac at 2.5 mg months ago and just today started 20 mg from 15 mg and still got a Big Buzz (actually, fearfulness). If I had started at 20 mg, I probably would have gone out and chased cars and nipped at the tires...

Maybe you don't need that high of a dose and that is quite a jump!!!Love Phillipa

Today I didn't take the prozac and the headache was much milder. Tomorrow I will probably take it again and see how it goes. The doc also gave me 5 mg ritalin to give the prozac a good start up boost. I need a boost because 7 family members are coming to stay for 2 weeks. Thanks for all your responses. BTW, I have been feeling better already.
