SEROQUEL versus ZYPREXA?

Posted by UgottaHaveHope on June 5, 2006, at 21:18:02

I would be so happy if I could find someone who has taken both and could tell me how each affected them?

Sorry only tried seroquel it knocked me out. Couldn't talk but could think the next day. The words wouldn't come out. I was in the hospital and they discontinued it that day. Love Phillipa

This will vary wildly for people who have taken the two -- the only constants will be that Seroquel is much more sedating than Zyprexa and Zyprexa is more lipid (cholesterol) changing and can cause diabetes if a diet is not kept in check. As far as my experiences -- I still take Seroquel, mild tremor and occasional facial fasciculations. Zyprexa -- would have been great except it caused major tremor, pseudoparkinsonism, and while some have had that dissappear during treatment I was afraid it wouldn't go away. Didn't matter what dose I was on, and the lowest dose was ineffective for my problem anyhow.

So that's my story -- just trying to balance the time I take the Seroquel and keep a good sleep cycle if possible to minimize as much as possible the overwhelming sleepiness.

Yxibow pretty much summed it up.

Your decision might depend on what symptoms you are trying to treat.

Although there has been some recent interest in the ability for Seroquel to exert antidepressant effects, I found Zyprexa to be more potent in this regard. Zyprexa is an excellent anti-suicide drug that can be used in emergencies. Seroquel seems to be used more often for anxiety. This might be due, in part, to a reluctance on the part of physicians to prescribe Zyprexa because of its potential to produce weight gain and diabetes risk. If you find Zyprexa useful, you can try using amantadine and metformin to mitigate these risks.

I didn't like Seroquel. It made me dysphoric. Zyprexa produced more of a mood-lift, but it lasted for only a week. People taking Zyprexa often say that they can think more clearly.

I'm not sure exactly what symptoms you are addressing, but all in all, I guess Seroquel makes sense to try first. It has a lower risk for producing EPS and perhaps TD as well. The dosage range for Seroquel is very wide. 25mg is often used for sleep and as a PRN for anxiety. 800mg is sometimes necessary to treat schizophrenia and mania. Some doctors have gone higher than that. People often report that the higher dosages are less sedating.

I've taken them both. And as a previous poster said Seroquel is by far more sedating. Seroquel is like being shot with an elephant dart.

At therapeutic dosages they both made me kind of absentminded. Like I would drive past my exit on the freeway.

Seroquel was way too stupifying and sedating for me. It also didn't last long enough. I had to take it every 3 hours because the anti-anxiety wore off too fast. Zyprexa is not that sedating and lasts a lot longer, needing only one dose a day though sometimes two is better.

Seroquel made me feel very depressed and lousy the next day. Dysphoric. While seroquel was depressing, zyprexa seems to be a mild antidepressant.

Seroquel gave me restless legs syndrome.

Zyprexa makes my hands jitter a little bit like parkinson's, but only after 12 hours since my last dose. If my hands are jittery, they calm down to perfectly still after a dose.

Clozapine is supposed to be the gold standard of antipsychotics and zyprexa is the closest thing to it. I consider seroquel to be just a super strong short acting version of remeron.

Seroquel has only a half life of 6 hours which means that it may need a twice daily dose in some individuals -- most though on a high enough dose need only a single night time dosing.

And yes, Zyprexa can cause pseudoparkinsonism like I had mentioned -- it got to me that I couldn't function with power tools and other things that shake my hands to the point where all my fingers were shaking. It was too much. Disappointing because Zyprexa made benzodiazepines superfluous, it was calming.

There are similarities between Seroquel and Remeron in the 5HT blockade -- Remeron actually helped my disorder before I switched to Seroquel due to the massive weight gain.

Clozapine and Zyprexa are closely related but Clozapine has two major things against it -- one, 2% must discontinue because of low white blood cell counts, and there are other unpleasant side effects, I believe incontinence and various bodily symptoms that though it is a gold standard for some serious schizophreniform disorders, it is not without risk and heartache for the patient.

seorquel made me sleep for hours and zyprexa just made me RUDE, and I mean REALLY rude and FAT. I had no idea that I was being REALLY rude and getting fat. I went from 80kg's to 100kg's in 2 months. Anyone from America that is reading this do a weight conversion to see how MANY POUNDS THIS IS (about 45 pounds). So basically neither worked well for me, both put me in a zombie like state. Good luck, neither of them worked for me but they do work for thousands of people around the world, Paul
