in Trouble again - are old/ expired meds ok?

Posted by kerria on June 5, 2006, at 17:53:55

hi Everyone,

Does anyone know how much heat can spoil pain meds, specifically oxycontin?
Please, Ed or anyone having any ideas whether they will work ok.
i'm in so much pain- having surgery soon- probably next month for PNE. Now i have to take meds for pain but i'm so disorganized/busy that i forgot to schedule my dr's appt in enough time and now have to resort to taking meds that were left in the trunk of a hot car last summer:(

My pain is so bad that i can't go more than 7 hrs without a dose and take breakthough oxycodone also. The breakthrough meds don't really help that much, i only have to get through 2-3 days with the old meds.

Maybe i should try taking one of the old tabs with two of the fresh meds next doses so at least it's mixed with fresh medicine and will partly work.

i wish i didn't wait too long.. Anyways- does oxycontin ER go bad easily?

i guess i'll find out anyways. in an emergency i'll have to try to contact dr. i can't live with the pain at all. i hate to have to do that.

i hope the medicine is ok.

thank you for any help,
k.

Call your pharmacist and bring in the old ones maybe he will switch them for you. And let the pdoc know. Maybe he can intervein with the pharmacist. Let me know how it goes. Best of luck. Love Phillipa

Thank you Phillipa.

i'm pretty sure the pharmacist won't exchange. First of all it's from a different pharmacy- it's the one i had to leave because of all the trouble they gave me- they wouldn't get any other substitute for me once other than football shaped tablets that released too quickly. i had to suffer with those tablets for an entire month.

Because it's a controlled drug they say that they're unable to switch anything- even if you have trouble. i never go to them anymore.

my psychiatrist doesn't prescribe them- my medical dr does.

i think i'll have to just hope that they're ok.

i've been having a hard time keeping on top of things lately. The 31-day-month last month and the appt with the surgeon distracted me from making the regular monthly appt. Yesterday i noticed that i hardly had any medicine left.
Why didn't i notice sooner?
It would be so good for me if the surgery is successful. It's so hard to control very bad pain with meds.

Thanks for being there,
k.

Kerria I'm sorry you're in pain. Do you think your GP would call in a RX or the surgeon? I feel so bad for you. Love Phillipa ps when is the surgery?

You're asking me? I wouldn't give it a moments thought with Oxycontin, not for a second. I'd be taking it.

If *my* choice was old meds, or pain, those old meds would not last 30 seconds.

Oxycodone has got to be stable. The army uses it.

Thank you Phillipa, for being so kind - it is hard to hurt. i took the last of the fresh meds now- i'll have to start the older meds next time. i hope they work because i'm having a hard time controlling the pain already today.

The surgery doesn't have a date yet- the dr needs to find a place i could have nerve testing first. i imagine it will be next month or maybe the end of this month. i need it to work so badly.

Thanks again,
kerria

Hi Declan,

i'm with you- i will have to take the old meds- starting next dose which will be in about five hours. i hope that they work. It's scary to have this happen- i wish i was more on top of things.
So much was happening and i forgot.

we'll , we will see. hopefully it will be ok.

thank you for writing,
kerria

Hi Kerria
I think or imagine that opium can lie around in old warehouses for centuries. If I had some here left over from the Crimean war, I'd take that.
You'll be right.

Hi Kerria

(((Kerria)))

Is there an expiry date on the box? There should be.

Having said that..... I've taken meds myself which were several years expired and they seemed to work just fine.

Ed Kerria said it was in the hot trunk of her car. Wouldn't the heat make a difference humidity does? Love PJ O

Hi Ed,

It's ok. i almost can't believe it.

The expiration that the pharmacy put on it is as usual- one year from the date filled, which was 9/07/05 but i put it away and didn't take it last summer after it was locked up in a trunk on a beach in Florida. We were on vacation and lost the keys to the rental car and had to call a locksmith. The temperature must have been very high for a whole day.
i took it five hours ago and it works fine- i'm so relieved.

i hope that everything's good with you, Ed.
Thanks for the reassurance.

Take care,
kerria

Hi Lar,

Thanks- you're right- it is ok. It smelled a little strong but i had to take it five hours ago and it's still good. i'm so glad. It would have really been hard if it wasn't.

Why i really need successful PN surgery. i'm so tired of fighting with this pain.

Take care,
kerria

People smoke opium, hey? I know it's not oxycodone, but opiates are opiates. Absolutely no point in talking to the chemist about it; everyone is so paranoid. I once got given someone else's much larger methadone dose at a pharmacy, and like a fool I worried about it and asked questions......you can imagine. I went home and had a nice time; this one wasn't my fault.

Hi K

One day at a high temperature isn't long. I think it would take a lot longer for it to be seriously damaged. Glad it worked! :)

That's so true!

Glad you had fun with the high dose of methadone lol.
