After having severe insomnia on Parnate for nearly 5 mos. the last thing i want is another med that causes insomnia. So my question is mostly for those who are currently or have taken EMSAM, is insomnia a side effect that most people get while taking this med? If the answer is yes, is it severe enough that a sleeping medication is needed? And, if anyone is on EMSAM, but was previously on Parnate or Nardil, is the insomnia as bad as it is/was with the other meds mentioned?
My concern is that if i stand a good chance of getting "severe" insomnia w/EMSAM like i had on Parnate...at least 2 nights a week where i didn't sleep at all, then i don't even want to try it. Seriously, as much as i would hate to have to do so, i would go back to ssri's, snri's and TCA's before going through the HELL of frequent insomnia again!Your imput is very much appreciated.

i had severe insomnia at first, but ambien cr allows me to sleep all night, and the insomnia has gotten better. of course, the depression has not gotten better, so that may not be a good sign.

I just stopped the patch today. 2 reasons, one being swelling in my hands and feet and the other being the insomnia. It was great the first 2 weeks but the the side effects started to kick in...I was on week 4.

> MonteHi Monte, I have not had insomnia but then I am an oversleeper. I do take .25mg at night of klonopin for anxiety and that may be why I still sleep good. I would probably still sleep good even withought the klonopin. I have no experience with other MAOI's.

To answer your question, it's 7: 14 am and I'm wide awake, never got to sleep despite 10 mg Ambien, 30 mg temazepam and 1mg clonazepam......Cecilia

Damn, sounds like my Parnate experience. Must be because both Parnate and EMSAM metabolize into amphetamine?? They relieve depression but the insomnia is bad enough to drive you CrAzY...sh*t, what to do, what to do??
Thanks for your imput.

Well the Emsam insomnia isn't nearly as bad as Parnate. I only lasted a week on Parnate-I would wake up after 90 minutes and that was it, no chance of any more sleep that night. At least on Emsam, when I finally fall asleep I stay asleep. I'm on day 23-certainly no beneficial effects that I can see, but I'm determined to give this med an adequate trial-there's nothing else left to try. Cecilia
