I am going to have to discontinue the patch because the insomnia has become intolerable and nothing seems to help. At the same time that the insomnia became bad, I have developed edema in my extremities. That is listed as a possible side effect.
I really have felt better on Emsam than on SSRI's or TCA's that I have tried. Is there any MAOI that has less of an insomnia problem? I just can't take much more of not being able to sleep.

I just can't take much more of not being able to sleep. All MAOIs have the potential to produce insomnia. I would be more concerned with the edema than with the insomnia. You should be able to treat the insomnia if you are aggressive enough with medication. What have you tried so far?
If the edema becomes unacceptable, you might try Parnate. Edema seems to be more common with Nardil. I'm not sure about Marplan or moclobemide.

Life is too short to feel like this....grrrr. The swelling is to the point that it is not even relieved after resting overnight. I have tried Klonopin, Neurontin, Restoril, Rozerem and Seroquel. I don't have sleep problems ever except on this and the dreadful time that I tried Cymbalta.
I am calling him today and telling him that I am done with the patch and we can start over in a couple weeks trying something else. I just don't know what else there is to try.

I've tried parnate and nardil and with nardil i had no insomnia, but didn't feel good. with parnate I have some insomnia, but i have found that cured with a small dose of klonopin at night if needed. I used to sleep 12 hours a day, now on parnate i sleep 8, but thats a good thing.

Parnate is probably less likely to cause edema. Marplan may cause less insomnia. I would look at which of the classic MAOIs has the profile that fits your symptoms best and go with that, as you never know which side effects you'll get.
I'm on Parnate, and I really have no insomnia. It's pretty effective but I probably need a dose increase (I'm at 40mg).

I think you are simply on too high a dose. You would benefit from trying half the dose. Or even less. Sensitivity to a medication can vary substantially, in different people. If it's good, other than the insomnia, cut the dose. Try that experiment, before you try switching to another drug.

I get edema from Nardil when I take 60 mg or more. It gets worse if I am also taking an NSAID such as ibuprofen or Aleve or something at the same time. I've occasionally taken Lasix to alleviate the edema, but I only do that short-term and try to deal with it by lowering my Nardil dose or stopping the anti-inflammatory.
I also have had insomnia, which got worse with Nardil. I take 10 mg Ambien most nights, and that does the trick.

???
I'm not sure what part of my post prompted this question. I really don't know about Nardil and anxiety. My diagnosis is atypical depression and mild ADHD.

It really wasn't what was in the post just that you take nardil and Ed said it was good for anxiety. And no one else has mentioned nardil in a while. Sorry to confuse you. Just desperate for answers from people on the med. Love Phillipa
