Usually depression brings a feeling of wanting to be alone. Sometimes it is the opposite. Any ideas as to why? My depression has recently heightened, and I've found myself freaking out when alone. Luckily I have various friends & family that I can hang with, but I really would like to get rid of this over-reactive anxious state.

Dorothy Rowe in "Beyond Fear" and some other books puts up the idea that the central feeling in depression is a sense of isolation, varously felt as imprisonment. Here's a bit...
'All the images are different, but they have one common meaning. The person is alone and in some sort of prison. Images of unhappiness are grey and miserable, but they do not contain this sense of enclosure, and other people are present, or easily available, in them. Also images of unhappiness are often described in 'as if' terms, 'I feel as if I am walking along a rainswept street'. A depressed person will say that it is not 'as if' but 'is'. The sense of being depressed is experiencing a sense of isolation, of being utterly and completely alone'.This is not quite what you were talking about, hey? But it came to mind.

I can relate to that horrible feeling of feeling totally isolated, but at the same time not able or wanting to seek help. As Declan mentioned, people have written about it like Neruda and Sytron.
warm regards, Jake

I'm terrified of being alone and don't have any friends. And have problems trying to interract IRL with people so I truly am alone and terrified all the time. I go in a store immediatedly want to leave but then don't want to go home. If I could sleep all day I would. Love Phillipa

Dear Jan,
You're NOT alone...but I feel so sad for you to feel that way. I have felt it too and it was a very hard season(s). It's been more than once. But maybe your's is for a very long, long, long time. I think you are very sweet and would make a great friend especially to someone who suffers in similar ways as you. 2 Corinthians 1 says that we suffer so that when we are comforted we will be able to comfort others later. If you want to talk more, email me.

Hi there
Another way of putting that is that when you comfort someone else you comfort yourself.

> DeclanWell put... and its a biological instinct of sorts to be gregarious among most humans. The fear of being alone is linked to a very common fear of death. In the movie Donnie Darko (its a recent cult classic), he comes to terms with the idea that in the end, we are all alone. But that's the alone inside, there's the alone in general, the concrete alone that wants friendship and love and a significant other that transcends culture.

Try a higher dose. You virtually cannot overdose on this stuff, within reason. Individual doses of 12 grams are well documented. Only gradually increase your dose. I'm not suggesting a leap to that level. I take 2 grams for a serious treatment, but I have needed five. I've never taken more, but that's only because I didn't need more. I know I could have safely done so, if I had felt the need.

Hi Phillipa I'm a bit like you I think. I'm happy at work with that feeling of putting in effort towards a common goal. However I live alone now and when I go home a feeling of nameless dread gradually descends as the evening progresses. If it's a night when I go and play in a band the dread is even worse until I go out and do it. Then I feel better and come home happy and with a feeling of being wanted.
Perhaps life only works for us when we fool ourselves through busyness that there really is a purpose. I've tried taurine and it didn't do anything for me either. Nothing does really short of doing something in real life

Fred I know you're right. I feel it in my gut. Buy it's been so long since I've done anything alone. I need to work on this in theraphy I guess. That is if I ever find a therapist who will listen to me. Love Phillipa

You can't substitute a combination capsule for pure taurine. Those are not suitable for high doses.

I was thinking it might be possible to find a combination of taurine plus *something*, but starting with the taurine titration.
