seriously...does provigil help adhd?

Posted by saturn on May 13, 2006, at 18:53:15

I realize everyone's mileage varies, but...

If I recall correctly a few years ago Cephalon did a trial for modafinil for adhd and it flopped.

Then recently it was granted approvable status by the FDA (though it is not yet approved as Sparlon), where it was unanimously regarded to provide significant improvement in adhd symptoms.

What gives? I'm sure if you do a test enough times in enough different ways you can come to a desired conclusion if that's your goal.

(I mean, as an aside, how was Buspar approved for GAD when every psych I've ever talked to regards it as worthless?).

Yeah, that sounds about right. It's not the question you ask, it's how you ask the question.

In my own very limited experience of it -- no. It isn't effective against the sort of monkey brain I have, at least. For a longish while, it boosted my mood, but in the end it seemed to increase my depression. I just tried it again, starting Monday when I ran out of Dexedrine (talked to my pdoc first), and I'm a whole lot more depressed now, too. {sigh}

And that's funny -- it's the only drug I've tried so far that actually worked acceptably for my anxiety!

Eh, I know I'm weird...

Hi Saturn

>how was Buspar approved for GAD

I think it was modestly effective in about half of the trials which were performed in GAD. It also performs well in animal models of anxiety, which probably contributed.

Provigil was approved by the FDA for ADHD? It does not mention on the website. Do you know what dosage is recommended?

I was told by a pdoc if you had taken a benzo buspar wouldn't work. Was that before they upped the starting dose? I think that was when 5-l0mg was the starting and permanent dose. Love Phillipa

Modafinil helped my ADD symptoms. (I'm not formally diagnosed, I just have "inattentiveness" right now.) Much of my inattentiveness may be from the anergia which is part of my depression. So I think it might help because of that?

Modafinil does seem to help some people. But, so does bupropion. I don't think anything as effective as, say, d-amphetamine is coming down the drug pipeline any time soon.

Re: Buspar. I think buspirone gets a bad rap because the doses initially used may have been too low. But I don't know much about GAD, which is what it's indicated for. I think it can make a good antidepressant augmenter. (Well, it once worked for me with Cymbalta, there's my bias. <shrug>)

In March 2006 the FDA Psychopharmacologic Drug Panel unanimously voted that Modafinil is an effective treatment for ADHD. However, the ADHD indication was not granted because it was not proven to be "acceptably safe" for use in children. The main issue seems to be a single reported case of the potentially lethal skin condition Stevens-Johnson sydrome. Cephalon has until Aug 22 (2006) to sort this out. If it does, they will market Modafinil under the name "Sparlon".

Sparlon will contain the same drug as Provigil--modafinil--but at different doses (which I'm not aware of) and possibly with a different release mechanism, so this is why you aren't finding anything on the provigil site.

Regards

Phillipa,

I really don't know much about this, but my impression is that Buspar doesn't work *generally*, prior benzo use or not.

I don't think there's any specific mechanism by where benzos would make buspar ineffective, it's just that by comparison to benzos it is so weak.

Please pardon the crude comparison, but it would be like giving caffeine to a former cocaine user. They're both stimulants but miles apart in effectiveness.

Fondly, Saturn

(I promise not to steal that closing again ;)
--I do really like it but you own it. Cheers.

don't mean to dis buspar--i'm sure it works 4 some (nm)

Thanks for your feedback, Chris

Yeah, for better or worse I think stimulants will remain the king of adhd treatments for the near future.

Peace

I gave it up the Fondly and went to love. And you're so right the drug buspar is just too weak. And I did try it in conjuntion with benzos nothing, nothing at all. Love Phillipa see?

That seems to be a common response.
