Lamictal NOT Parnate

Posted by crystee on May 8, 2006, at 1:10:17

Well I finally had my pdoc appt where I thought I would really get the parnate and they told me they don't do MAOI's so I got to see a different doc that day that does do them but he gave me Lamictal. Has anyone had ANY success on it?

btw the new doc says that my depression is really bipolar but I don't experience mania but about once every 6 years or so. So I can't have the MAOI because of the possibility of mania...whatever.
I am so sleepy on the lamictal...zzz...zzz...

p.s. I was formerly krystee but forgot my password.

I discontinued abilify bc of muscle cramps and prozac bc of NO sex drive. All I take is Vistaril prn and Lamictal 25 mg for 2 wks then 50 for 2 wks and see where it goes from there.

I am bipolar II and have been on MAOI's my whole life. Parnate is the only MAOI not supposed to throw a BP into mania although it did me (then again, I am far from normal ;-) So when your doc says that an MAOI is not a good choice for a bipolar he is mistaken when it comes to Parnate. I took lamictal and broke out in one of those "oh-this-could-be-fatal" rashes that it can cause so that ended pretty quick. Now if you want weightloss and a close runner up to Lamictal go for Topomax.

How much Topomax do you take?

How much did you start out on?

I am just trying to get an idea of the titration rate because my doc will ask how I wanna start and go up.
Does Topomax make u sleepy like Lamictal?

What else do you take with the Topomax?

I had found that I only needed 25mg of TMax to keep me level. Be prepared for the two weirdest side effects known to mankind with this one though. And if you are overweight #3 is a bonus.

1) Even if you went to Harvard you will forget how to spell cat and/or find it hard to put a coherent sentence together, and....

2) Soda will taste like piss. No really, this is a bonafide TMax side effect that happens to almost everyone.

3) You will forget what food is.

The first two fade as your body adjusts but the third doesn't, at least not with me or others I have spoken with. And no to feeling sleepy from it, at least not with me. Here is a link to the crazymeds.org board so you can read more about it.

Well called doc he says no topamax. He is convinced Lamictal will become, and I quote, "A friend of mine." Thx for the link :)

It boggles my mind how encourgaed and ehtustiastic these docs are about these drugs,i remeber my first one ever amost 8 years ago the doc saying.......Well have u on this effexor and youll be feeling like a new man,i also had a doc feel prozac was gonna be the greatest thing for me.

Even if they work i think we can all here agree no one is making out like bandits with there results, and i still refuse to believe that there is some UNKNOWN majority out there AISDE from the internets NUMEROUS and NUMEROUS groups which includes real people, and also people who are in REAL peoples net, meaning everyone i know personaly,u know, tom jane etc knows......where are these sworms of people these docs are having these outstanding success with?

Anyway getting totalt sidetracked,to answer your question,i think you will either totaly find Lamictal helpful,or you wont, doesent seem to have a medium, either like it or dont,it is odd he choose to go directly to a mood stablizer minus any form of stimulant or AD,im not a big fan of that but im not where i wanna be either so best wishes.

P.S Even if he chooses later on,again the specific too u request,parnate/lamicatal are a very common combo, actualy one of the few succesful ones mind you.**my opinion stated**

I agree 110% with you willyee. Most of them are just pushing the latest miracle pill that has been pushed on them in the form of free trips/samples/what-have-you. We are like little guinea pigs led to the slaughter at times. Not that they are all bad; most really do care. Ah hell....I hope the Lamictal works out. Did he/she mention the warning for the rash?

Well the Stevens Johnsons Rash isn't supposed to happen unless you go up in doseage fast. So the 25mg sound safe. Don't you think? Love Phillipa

Doc says in 2 mos we will discuss the possibility of adding on Wellbutrin if I am still tired...he told me today to take it at night and try that out. Yeah I know about the rash I think I am super paranoid about it. Oh and I didn't get a mood stabilizer first I have tried almost every AD except an MAOI and I have tried Lithium and Depakote and Tegretol as far as mood stabilizers go :)

Sometimes things are really s*cky! I could sure stand to lose my appetite!

I didn't get this side effect....I did with the SSRI's but not Topamax.

I didn't have this either - thank goodness bec. I love my diet soda!

I was hoping I would, but it never happened. My pdoc warned me to eat - he said the weight would fall off. I didn't lose my appetite or lose any weight. bleh!

I got depressed on Tmax, and had to stop at 100 mg. : ( It made my feet tingle too - which I didn't like.

Weird how meds work so differently on different people. I"m on Lamictal, and not sleepy at all. Wish I'd lose my appetite.
