manic-depression medication

Posted by cordacake on April 26, 2006, at 13:05:14

Hi this is my first time on the site but I have a question about my medication. I am currently being prescribed a daily dose of 60mg Prozac and 75mg of the mood-stabilizer Lamictal. The docter said this medication is for more depressive type bi-polars. At first I was really pleased not to be depressed any more but now a few months later I had to stop taking the medication because I have been going a bit manic. I am afraid to tell the docter I'm not taking the meds because what happened before when a different docter is they took all my anti-depressants away and put me on anti-psychotics (which I didn't take either) and I got depressed again and had to take street drugs. I'd rather not tell the doc I'm not taking the meds so I have them if I need them or do you think I should try to get tranqs for anxiety as well. If so which type? THanks

Hold that thought. I can't post more right now because I need to go somewhere right now, but I want to talk later about this. Don't want you to feel alone.

OK I made it back. I know I seem to be taking to you like you are right here, that's because I wish you were. I like to be personal, that's just me.

Anyway, I had a similar episode to yours. I am bipolar and I recently added Welbutrin to my Lamictal, and the Wellbutrin sent me into a major manic state, so I sort of know what you're going through.

Please don't try to self-medicate. I know what that is like too, especially with illicit drugs. I don't know how old you are, what you use, and how long you have been, but I wish I wouldn't have abused drugs due to the permanent damage I have done. It only exaggerated the real problem.

Just tell your your doc the truth. If you don't don't feel comfortable taking what he prescribes, then he should find an alternative for you. It takes a while to find the right doctor, the right med (or combo of meds) before you start feeling stable. And if you are not satisfied with your doc or he doesn't relate, don't hesitate to shop around for another one.

Be patient and persitent, but street drugs, although they make you feel good for the short-term, are not the answer.

Here anytime 4 U

Oh....I really feel for you.....I know that feeling. Honestly though, lamictal is awesome and prozac can be awesome but they both can swing you alittle manic (lamictal in the beginning and Prozac anytime). Not to mention that is a pretty high dose of Prozac. I know higher doses work for certain things but if your on the bipolar side - "HOLY COW". Don't stop everything altogether though O.K? If you are tempted to stop everything why don't you just cut them both back a bit or alot but keep it all in your system if at all possible until you can get back to your doc. At least keep with the Lamictal to some degree. Prozac is gonna stay in your system for a long time anyway after you stop taking it. Especially at that higher dosage. If you're seeing a good psychiatrist they should definetly understand. If your seeing a GP then try the best you can to find a psych. Keep posting too so you have some caring empathetic people that you can bounce it all off of. We'll all keep you from feeling crazy :) (Been there, Done that, Bought the T-shirt, right?)
And just so you don't feel totally alone....a friend of mine has recently switched to Lamictal along with her other long list of meds. She started getting a bit manic and the doc said she probably just needed to add a little bit of lithium to it and that should do the trick. She is doing better now than she has in years.
Lotsa Love and Luck!!!!!!!!

Although I am not bipolar I feel the advise you have received is very good especially get a pdoc and if you don't like him find another one and no street drugs. It will complicate the picture. Love Phillipa we're all on your side
