EMSAM - I've been *patched*!!

Posted by Enigma on April 21, 2006, at 11:47:08

Long story short:
Been waiting for Emsam for 1.5 years...
Current doc - never heard of it

So, I'm wondering how to 'educate' her without telling her how to do her job. ;) Anyway, I was doing horrible on Celexa (major depression, and got worse), so I quit cold-turkey. I previously sent her info (fax) on the med and asked her to order some samples. Well, she didn't. I was shocked (heh, no I wasn't) :).

I got my appt moved up a week, cause I was trying to get the med asap, but she later called to cancel it and said no pharmacies had the med in stock. She spoke to my wife, making it sound like the med was 'unavailable', not just out of stock. She didn't add the fact that it could be ORDERED. Jeez.

Anyway, I was pretty upset to hear that news. So, just my luck, she calls back 2 hours later, notifying me (my wife really, I was still in bed, miserable) that a Bristol-Myers-Squib? rep was in her office dropping off some Emsam samples. :)
Sheer coincidence too, because she did not call them.

So, I saw her the next day, got my script, and she gave me both sample packs she had, 2 5-day sample packs.

Well, I'm near the end of my 2nd patch. I actually felt really good yesterday, but I'm not blaming the med - way too early to tell. It was odd though that just 8 hours after putting the patch on, I was in a good mood, which is very rare for me. Probably just a fluke.. My mood is pretty whacked as it is.. fluctuates daily (and during the day), but generally from bad to worse, then back to bad again. 'good' is generally a rare sight.

Soo, found out my insurance covers the med, so it's only gonna be $30, which is their highest co-pay. That's MUCH better than the $450 some of you peeps had to pay. Ouch!

I'll let you all know how it works out. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Please keep us posted. I'm willing to dig into my money market if it works and does it relieve anxiety. Sounds too good to be true. My doc said the same thing the rep hadn't been in yet but he is willing to prescribe it for me. In the end I figure I save money. Look at all I've wasted on meds that don't work. I pray it works. Love Phillipa

I had a similar quick response. I hope you continue to see improvement. That's the way it has gone for me from the very start. Good luck and keep posting. Rob

Thanks for the kind words people.

No Raven, I don't really have anxiety. I used to, but it was only a side-effect of Prozac. I mostly just have severe depression, with a little bit of hypo-mania here and there (which used be the other way around 5 years ago - mostly hypo-manic, and light depression).

I still have yet to get outta the house to try and get my script filled. I have a very bad feeling I may have "ruined" the sample patches I had. I left them in my car for hours (forgot), and they were getting hit by the sun for a while, and they got pretty heated up. :( I'll post later when I find out how long it takes Brooks Pharmacy to order the new meds. I'll call first and try a different pharmacy if they give me a long ship time. Brooks is a pretty big chain up in this area, near Manchester NH. I'll probably try CVS if Brooks is a no-go.

Not sure if it is related to the Emsam, but I've been really, really tired lately. I've had to take naps during the afternoons.. depressed too. Could be depression-related. Depression almost always saps my energy and motivation. Pretty common for so many people with depression I would imagine. Anyway, I think this started some days before the patch though. I could also have a cold or something, but it's always hard to tell with me, as I have allergies too, or seem to be suffering from any number of things on a day to day basis, and these things keep changing over time. :(

Take care,

-E-
