Started Abilify

Posted by krystee on April 9, 2006, at 3:21:42

Well today was my second day on Abilify 10 mg. The first day my neck got really stiff and I felt like I had a lump in my throat and I vomited. On the second day my neck didn't get as stiff and the lump in my throat is smaller but I threw up once. We'll see how day three goes. I have heard you feel like crap for the first week though...anyone her know how long this feeling lasts? Does anyone know if vitamins/herbs interact with Abilify?

I didn't experience nausea when I first started Abilify, but I guess the dopamine agonist part of the drug is responsible for it. I experienced a mild akathisia-like state that lasted for about a week. I started right at 20mg. My best guess is that the nausea is temporary and that it will probably let up soon.

Why are you taking Abilify?

For me, it helps a little with mental energy and motivation. It also works to reduce anxiety and suicidal ideation.

I hope you feel better soon.

I am taking Abilify because I have taken almost every ssri and mood stabilizer and nothing helped so far with my anxiety, lack of motivation, and lack of energy and jumbled thoughts and rage. I don't have an official dx from my new pdoc. I am going to try an maoi if this doesn't work, hopefully parnate.

Yes. I still take 10mg.

If I respond adequately to Wellbutrin, I will probably attempt to discontinue it. It might not be necessary once I am brought into remission. It has been of great help, though. It helps to reduce suicidal thoughts and feelings of doom.

hi there,
i started abilify at 10mg, too, and titrated up to 30mg. it was originally for hallucinations that i was having, and then as a mood stabilizer/antidepressant. i had side effects the first week, though no nausea, but after that, i have no complaints with the med. good luck!

Hi Scott

How are you finding the Wellbutrin?

I am pleased to say that I feel the beginnings of an antidepressant response.

I have been feeling a little weird over the past two weeks. This is a good thing, as it reminds me of what I felt in 1987 when Parnate + desipramine began to work for me. It is difficult to describe. The improvement is minor, but clearly distinguishable. I'm not out of the woods just yet, though. I'll feel more confident once I see two full weeks without a relapse.

I'm looking forward to living a full and rewarding life.

These drugs really can perform miracles.

Hi Scott

Some very positive signs Scott. Are you planning to stay at 300mg? The risk of side effects may increase at a higher dose.

Do you think you will be able to decrease your Abilify soon? Perhaps to 5mg. Not yet - but perhaps some time soon.

Regards

Ed

I would like to attempt to discontinue it at some point. It is the drug I feel is least likely to be contributing to my current improvement. The Lamictal might be a necessary component, but I feel the nortriptyline and Wellbutrin combination contributes the most. We'll see.

As always, thanks for your interest.

Hi Scott

Do you think you could use Abilify as a PRN?

I really don't know. Probably. That was my intention. I just don't know if akathisia would be a problem upon restarting it if I were to be without it for any length of time. Who knows. Maybe it really is a DSS (dopamine system stabilizer) as Stephen Stahl likes to say. I might need the thing to stay well. I hope not, though.

Have you made any changes in your treatment regime recently?

10mg might cause akathisia. Perhaps you could try 5mg, or even 2mg. The 2mg tablet was introduced quite recently.

>Have you made any changes in your treatment regime recently?

I still take 80mg citalopram. I stopped taking 10mg amitriptyline when my presciption ran out. I want to start taking it again, it was regulating my sleep - which is why I was taking it.
