Please help with Seroquel question

Posted by UgottaHaveHope on April 11, 2006, at 13:34:35

I have been taking Seroquel 25mg for last eight months and it is the first thing that has really hepled me with anxiety in eight years.

Now I read that there are lawsuits saying that Seroquel causes diabetes.

1. Does anyone have any experience with this?
2. Is it just in the high doses of Seroquel?
3. And what type of blood tests should I ask for during my physical to see if this is happening?

hi! yeah, seroquel can cause diabetes and metabolic problems. I imagine a fasting blood sugar test would help detect this--just do one periodicially to see if there are any changes (such as an increase in blood sugar levels). Also, if you start putting on weight, that's another risk factor for diabetes (regardless of whether the weight gain is caused by the seroquel or just by bad habits).

Good lucK!

Hi,
I take 600mg of seroquel... I think there is a risk but I dont think you have much to worry about at 25 mg, thats an infantile dose.... I have had no problems whatsoever with weight while on high dose seroquel... I think its important that you watch your weight just like medem said... i dont know of any diagnostic tests for it, probably the same ones they use for diabetes in general... but just be practical, if your hunger is greater and ur putting on weight, then u may have a problem.. but i personally wouldnt worry at ur dose.. good luck!

Diabetes risk with seroquel does exist, but it is low. With the dose you are taking, I would think the risk is next to nothing. Once a year or twice a year fasting blood tests are a good idea for anyone on an antipsychotic. But again, I think 25mg barely qualifies. If you are overweight or have diabetes in the family history, then the blood tests take on more importance I think.

Time of exposure to the drug increases the risk. For example, someone on a high dose for a year is at a risk. Someone on a low dose for 10 years is at a risk.

On the other hand, I must admit these APs are powerful drugs. Even 25mg to me feels really really powerful. I was on 5mg zyprexa for 5 years. After being off it for 6 weeks, I tried just 1.25mg one night. Oh my, I could not believe the potency of that stuff. Wow.

Weight. Family history. Blood tests now and then.

Agree with the above fasting glucose and weight. But what about the zypexa lawsuit for diabetes? Love Phillipa. but 25mg is a very very low dose.

Not a big concern with such a small dose. I would however have periodic fasting glucose tests done (they can't hurt). Like maybe every six months? I am not sure on the time frame, I would ask your doc. Usually if the metabolic stuff gets to be a problem they can add metformin and that seems to work for some.
