Does Parnate work for GAD?-Please Advice!

Posted by Tom Twilight on April 8, 2006, at 15:28:08

High all

Sorry I haven't been around much lately
The reason is I haven't been feeling to good.......

To cut a long story short I've been experiencing horrible anxiety since I went off Marplan.

I'm taking Tianeptine at the moment, but it doesn't seem to be helping much.

I could switch on to Parnate
I know Parnate is a good AD, but does it help anxiety?

It does for me Tom. It is indicated for anxiety disorders, such as panic disorder, agoraphobia, social phobia and ocd. It's more activating than the other maoi's, but it's not an anxiety feeling. I have tried everything for GAD, social phobia and ocd and Parnate has worked the best for me.

Hi Tom
It might depend. For me more than 10mg/d made me feel a bit intense in a way that wasn't helpful (nor was it unpleasant). The nice thing about Parnate is that if it does work for you, if you can (work out how to get some) sleep and your BP is OK, and if it doesn't stop working, then it's great.

Best of luck if you decide to try it. Love Phillipa

I'm curious why did you come off Marplan? And yes, Parnate works for GAD.

Hey everyone

Thanks for Input!

I'm hesitant to start Parnate becauses of the potential problems with BP and Isomnia.

I bought the Parnate from an online pharmacy.
I know this is a bad idea, but I'm just desperate for some relief.

Unfortunatly I live in the UK, and don't have insurance.
UK Mental Health Care makes the US services look Stella, in comparison

In answer to Jacklin's question I stopped taking Marplan because of it didn't work well for depression or social anxiety.

It worked quite well for General Anxiety and did help a bit with social.....
Unfortunatly I felt unmotivated, and often had brakethrough depression on it.

Hi Tom

Best of luck with the Parnate. 10mg in the morning is a good starting dose.

Parnate certainly does work for anxiety in some patients. Some people find it to be 'stimulating' but I think you responded well to stimulants anyway so that should be a good thing.

Kind regards

Ed

I can't imagine Parnate helping anxiety. I only lasted a week on it, after a week of 90 minutes sleep a night I gave up. But everyone is different. Cecilia

It is good for anxiety in that it is motivational and not anxiety causing. You feel better on it because it is so energizing. Hope it works for you as well as it's worked for me (another GAD sufferer)

Parnate is EXTREMELY anxiety causing for some people. It felt to me like I was drinking a gallon of coffee every hour and it certainly wasn't motivational, not being able to sleep made me far too tired to even think of doing anything. But you might have a totally opposite reaction. Unfortunately, we were all born about a hundred years too soon, someday, maybe, doctors will be able to figure out how meds work and why people have such varying reactions. Cecilia
