Clonazepam = depression?

Posted by psychopharmacon on April 2, 2006, at 4:15:00

Some time ago I started taking clonazepam (Klonopin, Rivotril). I took only 0.5 mg once in a while, and each time, I got quite depressed, dysphoric and everything generally felt empty and hopeless.

I also got this weird and unpleasant feeling in my mouth everytime I ate something. Has anyone else experienced this?

Anyway, I flushed the rest of the pills down the toilet. :/

Well, no, but most people get deressed on Clonazepam. So, nothing unusual!

I think a key point is it CAN but does not always cause those depressive symptoms in folks. Some folks who have been pracically life paralyzed by anxiety symptoms find it can have the opposite effect and open up the world to them.

Caution is needed, of course, in particular if one is planning it as a longer term treatment. It is a CNS depressant and depression certainly can develop - sometimes as a new finding and sometimes as a worsening the disorder that's already there.

I am sorry it caused those symptoms in you.

jup. valium makes me depressed. xanax angry and clonazepam has actually an antidepressive effect, at low dosage, for ME.

I've been on klonopin for about 12 years for SP. Nothing else I tried put a dent in my social anxiety until klonopin. That said, for years now I've tried to find something to blend with it to improve my mood as I'm at the very least mildly depressed (nothing has helped for the dysthimia).

My SP was so bad before I took klonopin I don't know if I was as depressed before taking it or if the klonopin is making it worse. My hunch is it's a little of both. I got off klonopin a while back, but all my SP returned. It had been in remission for so long I forgot how bad it was.

So now back to klonopin so I'm functional, but still with this dysthimic condition. It sucks, but it's better than not being able to leave the house. I'll be adding EMSAM later this month, perhaps that will help.

Rob
