For those of you that know me I don't think you think I'm crazy but the wierdest thing is happening to me. And no I'm not afraid of the luvox and valium. But when I go to read a book or anything my eyes feel like they are about to be pulled out of my eye sockets and the words all sound singy songy and make no sense so I can't read anymore and it's one of my passions. Could high anxiety cause this wierdness. I have tried going to bed earlier to taking the valium earlier but nothing works. It really is scarey. Any ideas? Thanks Phillipa ps could I be psychotic?

> ps could I be psychotic?
Yeah, you could be psychotic.
But I doubt it. What you described sounds a heck of a lot more like anxiety to me. The deciding point for me on this? When I "hear" that sort of sing-songy sound to what I'm reading, it's usually during times of high anxiety, and restlessness.
It does sound like anxiety, and the hardest part is that there's a vicious circle that goes on: you're afraid it's going to keep happening, so every time you try to read, you're more anxious, so it's more likely to happen...
Good luck, Phillipa.

I would suggest well, you know me, well im recovering from last night....
Talk to a nuerologist about this and about the way you feel, anything with nerve connections freakes me out. Talk about a MRI to see if there is any abnormalties.
I need to get one to, i got a CAT scan after the accident when got the hard hit to the head (no more head bangage anymore ROFL) I hit the top of the car (the light fixture and broke it) yea thats really hard... anyways there was no skull fracture and i guess thats why my head is hard ROFL! But they said they found a Cist at the back of brain, they said it was nothing but i disagree. I am getting to a nuerologist after all this denist stuff (getting a crown on my tooth) is done.
Talk to your doctor.
Take Care

Matt guess what I am seeing a neurologist on Tuesday because I have a small tumor on my pituitary gland found with an MRI about two years ago and when I was in the Er the other day the ER doc referred to a neurologist for another MRI to see if it had grown. But the nurse said he might not do another. Mom 2 Phillipa

Go to one of those "Open MRI CLINICS" and get that checked out.

Does the same thing happen when you read a computer screen, or just a book? If it's just a book, that would be a vote for anxiety, along with the lump in the throat. Could it be that you are just so anxious you can't sit still to read? Does this always happen when you try to read or are there times of the day that it doesn't? Reading can be such an escape and so interesting-what a loss! I hope you get over this really soon...

From what you've described, it sounds like something that happens when I'm too restless -- usually from anxiety -- to sit still to read. When my mind is in ten thousand other places, and just can't quite settle in.
The lump in your throat, though, might be heartburn secondary to anxiety. At least, when I get a lump in my throat during times of anxiety, I have found that Maalox tablets (or Tums, which I only get at the blood bank) will usually fix it.
Good luck.

It all happens when I sit still. Or have nothing to do like pick on my cuticles. The cycle is visious. I sit down to watch TV and I get the lump and then can't still or concentrate. And no it doesn't happen on a computer screen just a book or reading signs while out. And then I turn the heating pad on and put it on my back to relax me in bed. Put on reading glasses pick up the book and it starts all over again. I hate it. I could be happy sitting and reading again. You get lost in a good book. Fondly, Phillipa

My suggestion would be to give the reading a break for a week or two. These odd things happen from time-to-time, and focusing too intently on them may cause further anxiety. If you're really worried about some physiological problem, of course see a doctor. But it doesn't sound to me like anything you'd run out to an MRI center for, especially if you haven't been checked out by your own doctor yet.

Hi Phillipa,
This sounds really uncomfortable, and probably having it feel so scary doesn't make the anxiety any better. I'd call my pdoc first thing tomorrow.

I find it really hard to read or concentrate on anything when I'm anxious and I get the lump in my throat and a terrible choking sensation which makes me have awful coughing attacks and then I find it hard to breathe, I can totally understand. Hopefully you can sort this out soon. Luckily I don't get this anymore, you're not nuts Phillipa, you're just having a bad time at the moment, Paul.

Hi Phillipa
This is exactly what happens with my anxiety. I try really, really hard to make myself comfortable so that I can settle down and read. It seems that all the attention I pay this "relaxation" just makes me more anxious. I cannot, cannot get my mind to rest at bedtime. Reading, which usually gives me great satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment (look what I learned in a book today!) becomes ridiculously difficult. I can see the words, they get scanned by my eyes, but there is no meaning to them. Even if I try to read aloud they make no sense. Though I don't get any noises associated with it, I am agitated by ambient sound, like a TV on in the room, or people talking. It goes away on its own. It's just completely unpredictable and frustrating.
Getting your eyes checked in any case is a good idea; and make sure you have good lighting and are sitting comfortably.best wishes

Clear Skies thanks for answering my thread. So do you continue to read while it's going on or just forget about it? I can read the computer okay hence why I answer all the threads I can. I went two nights without reading. Tried again last night and the same thing and boy does that up my anxiety. Do you think taking the valium earlier than bedtime might help? I know it has a long halflife but it isn't cutting it and the pdoc just doesn't care. I looked or rather asked at the ER if they knew any others. They gave me a list and mine was number one group and you cant change pdocs in that practice. Thanks Love Jan

When I'm like this I often miss reading entire words, or worse, I transpose letters, changing the meanings of the words. I try not to post when I'm like this because i have completely misinterpreted a post's meaning.
Mostly though, I have more of a problem forming thoughtful replies to posts. It feels like I couldn't quite grasp what a post was about, and I can't find the words to make a coherent reply. I get pretty quiet.CS

So you don't post then. Maybe that is part of my problem sometimes I answer things in the wrong way and people take offense. Thanks for the tip. Love Phillipa

I was the same way when I would try to read when I was on Effexor, my mind would not process the words. I could read a whole page and not know a thing I read. It's very frustrating! I still get like this quite alot even though I'm no longer on the Effexor when my anxiety gets real bad. I just don't read or atempt it when I see it's not working. What's bad is that my psychologist is always giving me assignments to read and write about or books to read to try to help me, but I can't do it, my mind won't work! You're not alone, and it's not your eyes. When I try to sleep I get on the computer and do this. It's more like talking and that I can always do. If I need to sleep, I'll take 2-3 Benadryl about 45 minutes before bed and that helps me.
This is the end of the thread.
