Where did my memory go?!??

Posted by freckafree on March 10, 2006, at 15:33:33

Uh...what was it I wanted to ask? Oh, yeah. About memory. ;-)

I'm on about day 10 of a new med mix -- Wellbutrin upped to 450 mg from 300 (in a split dose, a.m. and noon) and 50 mg Trazodone at night.

Over the course of the past week, I've developed a serious case of CRS. If I stop a task to answer the phone, when I go back to the task I can't remember where I was -- or I don't even remember to go back to it! Can't remember what conversations I've had with which people. You get the picture.

Is this a side effect that will likely go away? Or should I try adjusting meds again? It's starting to drive me a little nuts.

This almost exactly describes the side effects I had while on Wellbutrin several years ago when I went from 300 to 450 mgs. I went back to 300 and these side effects quickly subsided.

I had the same thing happen when I went from 300 to 450 mg of Wellbutrin; also, I had impotence as a side effect. I thought I had dementia...to me it was more like short-term memory loss and passing confusion. I had to drop to 300 mg Wellbutrin and now I'm my usual absent-minded self! (nothing can be done about that)

Wireless & Bassman,

Thanks for the info!

I experienced poop-out on 300, which is the reason for the increase. Other than the memory thing (and I can relate to the dementia comparison!), 450 has helped.

Was poop-out the reason for your dosage increase, too? How well was your depression controlled once you dropped back to 300?

Thanks again.

Freckafree,

No, the 300 mg didn't poop out, it just didn't work. I've read in a couple places that users say you need to give Wellbutrin a 3-6 month trial to get the SE's to calm down and to see if it works for you. That's a long time, I know, for just the hope that something will work when you are in emotional pain-but I do think it is valid. Wellbutrin just seems to take a long time to work and become side-effect free enough to make a good judgement about whether to continue.

Hope that helped a little.

I experienced poop-out on Wellbutrin fairly quickly, after about 6-7 months. It was very unfortunate because it was working very well until that point. After the failures of 450 mgs, I ended up staying on 300 for another 20 months after initial poopout, which was not good. Thats really when a lot of the side effects really became bad, lack of sexual desire/occasional impotence, depression, etc. If I knew then what I know now, I would have gone on a low dose SSRI or tried alternative methods (or a combination of the two). But that's just me.

That sounds like my current Wellbutrin med history..and similar outcome to yours. Thanks-I'm going to do something now rather than later...

Unfortunately for me after a week it made me manic. Fondly, Phillipa ps I seem to react paradoxially to everything.

Trazodone can contribute to memory problems. I noticed it at 50mg, worse at 100mg. My daughter experienced it also at 50mg, which made the memory problems she had with Lexapro even worse. Pdoc said he never saw memory problems with Lexapro. She would walk into a room and forget why she was there every single day, forgot what I just asked her. Fired him and got another pdoc. Stopped the Lex and memory improved.

Regarding Wellbutrin and Trazodone interaction, possible CYP2D6 inhibition?

I have had the same experience regarding memory loss. After six months of taking Wellbutrin 300XL during which I was my happiest and most energetic ever, all of a sudden it stopped working for me. Not only that, I started to seriously lose my very short term memory. My Dr. just increase to 450mg and now after two days of taking it I still feel no change. I am down, low energy, not motivated to do anything, even to get out of bed. Is it possible to get Wellbutrin to work again or do I have to find a different drug?
